On 1 April 2003, Leslie Cheung, suffering from clinical depression, died by suicide by jumping off the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel, Hong Kong. However, various urban legends about his death emerged after that.
Faked death[edit]
Sightings of Leslie Cheung in Buenos Aires, Argentina have been reported following his death in 2003. Rumor has it that Wong Kar-wai secretly met with Cheung in Buenos Aires, 2006.[1][2][3]
Song Zude, a famous person in the entertainment circle of mainland China, claimed that Cheung became a monk in Mount Wutai after the "faked death", and he had met with him in 2006.[4][2]
Rumor has it that the person who jumped off the hotel at the time was a gambler seeking death.[3]

Murder[edit]
In 2017, Siu Yam-yam stated that Leslie Cheung had always been afraid of heights. She believes that people who fear heights dare not jump off such a high place and suspects that the cause of Leslie Cheung's death was murder.[5]
Rumor in South Korea has it that Cheung was murdered by a gang due to his refusal to make movies invested by the gang.[6][7]
Love triangle[edit]
There were rumors that Leslie Cheung committed suicide due to falling into a love triangle. In 2020, Beijing TV mentioned this statement and displayed two letters claiming to be the suicide note of Leslie Cheung to prove the claim. However, the correctness of the letters has been questioned for its words not in line with Cheung's convention.[6]
Possessed[edit]
In 2002, some reports claimed that Leslie Cheung was possessed. Cheung denied all related rumors.[6] Alfred Mok, designer of Leslie Cheung's residence, recalled Cheung once hoped to go to Sichuan to absorb Reiki to solve the problem of possessed.[8]
It is rumored that Leslie Cheung was used "Tame Head" (Chinese: 降頭), a kind of witchcraft popular in Southeast Asia, by a Thai youth while filming Inner Senses in Thailand, resulting the death of Cheung.[9]
In 2023, a fortune-teller stated Leslie Cheung's "Fortune-Energy Index" from 70 points in 1999 to -20 points in 2000. She claimed Cheung encountered the evil spirits in 2000 and been possessed, eventually manipulating Cheung's suicide.[9]
Another thing that is often rumored to be mentioned is that Leslie Cheung attempted to visit Chow Yam-nam. Chow Yam-nam rejected the audience with Cheung in Hong Kong. Following Cheung's suicide a month later, Chow expressed his sadness as well as his belief that Cheung was possessed by ghosts and was unable to fight them off.[10][11]
