Sandu Vladlena Olegovna (born August 17, 1982, Feodosia, Crimea Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, USSR) - screenwriter, theater director, director of documentary and live action films.

Biography[edit]

Vladlena Sandu was born on August 17, 1982 in Feodosia.[1] After her parents divorced in 1989, she moved to her mother's hometown of Grozny in the Chechen-Ingush ASSR. In 1994, the First Chechen War broke out, and for four years she grew up in war conditions. Vladlena's mother was wounded. In 1998, Vladlena, together with her mother and grandmother, became refugees and moved to Georgievsk.[2]

In 2011 she graduated from David Reef's course in contemporary art at the Moscow Rodchenko School of Photography and Multimedia. In 2016, she graduated from the directing department of Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, Alexei Uchitel's workshop. In 2019, she entered the postgraduate program of Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography at the Department of Aesthetics, History and Theory of Culture and published several scientific articles. In 2019, she graduated from the Boris Yukhananov Theater Directing Studio.[1]

After Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine began, Sandu left Russia and lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands.[3]

Creativity and recognition[edit]

In 2015, the educational short feature film “Kira” won a special jury prize at Kinotavr (Russia), as well as awards for best director and camerawork at the VGIK IFF 2015 (Russia).[1] In 2016, the documentary “Holy God” based on Sandu's memories of the war in Chechnya was released. It received funds for production from the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation but was not censored due to the issues raised in the film. The film “Holy God” was selected for many international film festivals (Dok Leipzig, Rotterdam Film Festival, etc.) and received several international and Russian awards. The following film, Eight Pictures from the Life of Nastia Sokolova, premiered at the 2018 Rotterdam Film Festival and was awarded the Silver Eye Award 2018 by the Documentary Film Institute (Czech Republic).[4]

From 2019 to 2022, she served as writer, director, and creative producer of the arthouse series ″Identity″.[5] Producers of the series were Valery Fedorovich and Yevgeny Nikishov. The main character of the series was an actress from Kazakhstan Lena Tronina. The premiere took place in 2022 at the Berlinale.[6] In the fall of 2022, a documentary short film about the regime and dictatorship in the Chechen Republic, “No Nation Without Culture” premiered in the Doclisboa (Portugal) competition program.[7] The film won The main RheinMain Short Film Award for the best short film at the GoEast festival.

In September 2023, the autobiographical play “Cinema Rainbow” premiered in the competition program of the Amsterdam Fringe Festival in which Sandu directed and acted. The play was awarded Best Amsterdam Fringe 2023.[8]

Since 2017, Sandu has been making a documentary autobiographical film “Memory” about the war in the Chechen Republic. The film was supported by IDFA Foundation, IDFA Bertha Fund, CNC Foundation and the Netherlands Film Fund, and is scheduled to premiere in 2025.[9]
