St. Peter's House Hospital (locally just St Peter's House) was a geriatric hospital located in Stromness, Orkney.[1] Located on Back Road, the facility opened around 1960 and shut in 2020 after a new health facility was constructed in Hamnavoe on the west side of Stromness.[2]
History[edit]
St. Peter's House opened around 1960 in Stromness as a geriatric hospital after moving into a former manse, built in the early 20th century.[3] Due to the demand of residents in St. Peter's House, the hospital was extended in the 1960s, and again in the 1990s.[4]
Over time, the facility fell into a state of mild disrepair, and talks began on the replacement of the hospital. The site chosen for the new facility 'Hamnavoe House' was located in the district of Hamnavoe, west Stromness, just south of the Garson Industrial Estate, and was originally planned to be completed by 2018.[5]
After a couple years' delay, the new Hamnavoe House opened to residents in January 2020, with 30 beds; two less than what St. Peter's House had. In June 2020, St. Peter's House Hospital went up for sale, but as of 2024, a buyer has yet to be found.[6]
