Ait Waghlis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ait Waghlis are a Kabyle tribe established on the west side of Soummam river and the east side of mount Akfadou.[1] They are the biggest tribe of the Soummam valley in term of population.[2]

Etymology[edit]

One hypothesis connects the Ait Waghlis name to that of their eponymous founder, Waghlis.[2]

According to another hypothesis, the name of the tribe comes from the Kabyle name for Panthera which is the Berber root γls. It could have two different meanings: It could come from the colours of the spotted clothing worn by the members of the tribe or simply from the bravery of the animal.[3]
