"Grand Maison Tokyo" is a Television drama that aired every Sunday from October 20 to December 29, 2019 from 9:00pm in the "Sunday Theater" slot on TBS Television (Japan)[1] Starring Takuya Kimura. (This was the first drama starring him after Japanese era name was changed to "Reiwa" in May 2019.)[1]

Cranked up at the famous three-star restaurant L'Ambroisie in Paris on August 30, 2019.[2] This is the first time in the world that a drama will be filmed at this restaurant.[2]

This will be Kimura's first starring role on TBS Television (Japan) in the same frame in two years, since "A LIFE - My Sweetheart" in the January 2017 season (Mitsuhiro Oikawa, who plays the role of Kamehito Aizawa in this drama, also appears in this drama),and his first collaboration with heroine Kyōka Suzuki in the same frame in 12 years, since "Karei-naru Ichizoku," also in January 2007.

A special drama is scheduled to air in winter 2024.[3]

The catchphrase on the program's official website is "Catch your own star".

Synopsis[edit]

Prologue
Japanese chef Natsuki Ohana trained at the prestigious restaurant "L'Ambroisie" in Paris, France, which was awarded the highest Michelin Guide star (three stars), and opened his own restaurant "Escoffille" in Paris with Rikutaro Kyono, who trained at the same restaurant. They went on to win two stars from Michelin Guide. However, in 2015, Obana was arrested after a dish he served at a luncheon for a French-Japanese summit meeting was contaminated with an allergy ingredient (nuts) and he punched a French government official who pursued him about it. The restaurant goes bankrupt, losing all of its reputation and credibility.
Beginning
Three years later, in 2018. Ohana, who had fallen into debt collection in a corner of Paris, opened their new restaurant, "Grand Maison Tokyo", together with Rinko Hayami, who had failed an interview at L'Ambroisie, where he had once trained, and set out to win three stars. At first, Ohana was going to follow the same "style of using many high-end ingredients" as Escoffille, but his former colleague, Kamehito Aizawa's "taste that suits the Japanese palate" was well received, and he changed direction to a style of "winning with the combination of ingredients and invisible effort," mainly using domestic ingredients, and obtained a 50 million yen loan from the bank to open the restaurant pre-opening. The company secured a 50 million yen loan from a bank to open the restaurant.
Middle
The pre-opening ended on a high note. However, due to an article by one of the invited guests, Linda Machiko Richard, all reservations were cancelled. In the midst of this predicament, with the number of customers dwindling, Ohana proposes participating in a food festival, and although word of mouth brings about a lineup of customers, the restaurant is forced to discontinue sales due to accusations by Fumio Eto, the owner of "gaku". Despite this reputational damage, the food and service provided were highly acclaimed, and the restaurant began to attract regular customers, ranking 10th in the Top 50 Restaurants, a pre-Michelin competition. However, its competitor, gaku, where Manabu Tango serves as chef, is ranked 8th, ahead of Grand Maison Tokyo.
Final stage
It turns out that the culprit in the nut-laden incident three years earlier was Shohei Hirako, an apprentice chef at Escoffille, who made a mistake in cooking. Shohei confesses to everything and tries to quit as a chef to take responsibility, but Grand Maison Tokyo makes a decision to accept him as a staff member. With the Michelin judging looming, Ohana, who is determined to win three stars, takes on the challenge of cooking a dish using tuna, which is considered difficult in French cuisine. However, Rinko, as the owner-chef, chooses her own "grouper roti" instead of Ohana's tuna dish. As a result, the restaurant wins "three stars" at the Michelin presentation.
Epilogue
Later, Aizawa left for France with his wife and child, Hirako launched his own restaurant, and Moe Matsui opened a cake shop. As each of the staff members moves on to a new stage of their careers, Grand Maison Tokyo restarts with the goal of becoming "the best restaurant in the world".

Characters[edit]

Grand Maison Tokyo[edit]

A French restaurant opened by Ohana and Rinko in a corner of Meguro, Tokyo. Serita, Kyono, Aizawa, Moe, Shiorina, and Shohei later joined the team. At the end of the last episode, the restaurant was awarded three stars, and everyone went their separate ways.
Natsuki Obana (age 47)
Acted by Takuya Kimura
The protagonist of this work. Sous chef. He is an unconventional man who is absolutely confident in his skills, his palate, and his sense of taste, and is willing to make any sacrifice for the sake of his cuisine. He is uncompromising when it comes to his cooking, and his blunt, unspoken words and actions make his interpersonal relationships with others quite difficult. He hates to lose at anything. During his time in Paris, he trained as a chef at the three-star restaurant "L'Ambroisie" and then opened his own restaurant, "Escoffille," which won two stars and was extremely popular as a chef. He was expected to become the first Japanese chef to win three stars for setting up his own restaurant in Paris, but the nut-laden incident[Note 1] brought down Ohana's name to the ground as a "disgrace to Japanese chefs," and he lived a life of degradation from then on. One day three years after the incident (2018), he met Rinko Hayami in Paris, which ignited his passion as a chef once more. He decides to open "Grand Maison Tokyo" to make her win three stars.
Since he had no home in Japan, he stayed at Rinko's house for a while and eventually settled in her garage, but from the end of episode 8, he moves into an apartment with Kyono (but even Shohei, who abandoned everything in episode 10, moves in and eventually returns after losing a game of rock-paper-scissors).
He confesses that when he was discouraged because he was only awarded two stars, he was saved by eating a bribe dish he had prepared, Shepherd's pie, and said, "Let's try again.
In the last episode, he was obsessed with tuna cuisine and promoted Shohei to sous chef to concentrate on menu development, and completed a dish for the Michelin three-star investigators to try. However, just before cooking, Rinko, who had absolute confidence in his grouper cuisine, told him that he would change the menu, and he resigned from the restaurant, saying, "There is no point in winning three stars when I have no dishes of my own. However, this was an action taken by Rinko herself to make him learn what it takes to be the owner-chef of a three-star restaurant. Kyono and Aizawa were aware of this from the beginning, and Shohei is told by him.[Note 2]
At the same time, the master of "L'Ambroisie" who let bygones be bygones when it became public that the culprit in the nut-laden incident was not Ohana, was scouted by him to be the head chef of a sister restaurant to be opened in Tokyo in commemoration of the Olympics, but he turned it down and instead took on "storekeeping" at a restaurant run by his Japanese master Ushio, who went on a round-the-world trip.[Note 3]
Rinko Hayami (age 49)
Acted by Kyoka Suzuki[1]
The heroine of this work. Owner-chef. She has an absolute sense of taste and knows the ingredients and cooking process of a dish when she eats it. Her mother, who was fighting an illness, introduced her to an article about Ohana, and she was shocked when she tasted his cuisine at "Escoffille". While interviewing for a job at a three-star restaurant in France, he met Ohana and together they opened "Grand Maison Tokyo. Their home was given to them by their mother's lover. The home is also used as an office for the restaurant because "I want to make the restaurant more spacious. Although she is the senior chef by seniority, she is called "Auntie" and "Rinko" by Ohana.
Shohei Hirako (age 29)
Acted by Yuta Tamamori[4]
Youngest chef at a buffet restaurant → Sous chef at "gaku" → Ghost chef at "Grand Maison Tokyo" → Sous chef at "Grand Maison Tokyo".
His parents own a dumpling factory.
When he was in France, he worked as an apprentice (commis) to Ohana at "Escoffille" for three and a half years. At that time, he was described as "the stability of the kitchen increases when he is around" because of his quick work. His bribe dishes using vegetables and other ingredients from portions not served at the restaurant came to be described as "stingy cooking.
he meets Ohana again after a long time in Japan and invites him to come to "Grand Maison Tokyo," but he distrusts him because he has never received any praise from him and because of the nut-laden incident three years ago. However, he secretly cooperated in the opening of "Grand Maison Tokyo" by asking Miyu's father, Saidou, for a loan and by lending him the name of the restaurant to provide quality gibier.
When he was invited to the pre-opening of Grand Maison Tokyo and felt that fish dishes were being served too slowly, he heard about the situation from Kyono and hurriedly helped prepare the sea urchins to save the day.
He confesses to Ohana that the nut-laden incident three years ago was due to his own ineptitude in cooking.
When he was about to quit his job as the head chef of a hotel buffet restaurant, he was forced by Ohana to help out at a food festival in which "Grand Maison Tokyo" was participating. After quitting his job as head chef of the hotel's buffet restaurant, he tried to return to his parents' home, but changed his mind when Ohana told him, "Don't quit French cuisine! He changed his mind. When he leaves the hotel buffet restaurant, Tango comes to him and tells him that he will work at "gaku. For a while, he contributed as a sous chef by ranking "gaku" 8th on the Top 50 Restaurants list, but after Linda found out the truth about the nut-laden incident, he left the restaurant, not wanting to cause any more trouble for the restaurant. Later, he was urged by Ohana to come to Grand Maison Tokyo.
Shohei is publicly revealed as the culprit in the nut-lacing incident by Linda. Anticipating this, Ohana persuades Shohei to apologize to Aizawa and others, and he goes to Grand Maison Tokyo, where he is asked to be involved in the development of a new menu item.
Kouichi Serita
Acted by Kanichiro[5]
Part-time employee -> apprentice cook. Used to work at a tavern for six months.
When he sees an opening for an employee at Grand Maison Tokyo, he immediately applies. Ohana sees his passion and hires him immediately, but his skills as a chef are still limited and his knowledge of French cuisine is limited.
Kuzuto, who is not easily trusted with the cooking, asks him to leak inside information to Eto, and he accepts the money. Although he was puzzled by the money, he was criticized for his bribe dishes and was furious with Ohana for the way he had handled Spanish mackerels. At Kyono's invitation, he comes to Grand Maison Tokyo as a customer and is impressed by the taste of each dish, but he questions the taste of the fish dishes. He is told by Ohana that the fish dish was prepared by Kyono himself, and that it tasted bad because it was handled incorrectly as an ingredient. He apologizes for his spying and asks to be hired back. Later, he returns the money he received from Eto for spying.
As mentioned above, his knowledge of French cuisine is limited, but he always calls himself a "founding member (of Grand Maison Tokyo)," and although he has been acting as a senior to his contemporary Moe, he properly instructs Iwashiro and Kanai as a true senior in the final epilogue.
Moe Matsui

Buffet restaurant patissier → "Grand Maison Tokyo" patissier.
He immediately uploads the desserts he makes to social networking sites. She is a confident person who proudly claims to be "the world's best pastry chef with a great sense of taste. She has obtained the first grade of the color coordinator certification test.
She has dreamed of becoming a cake baker since kindergarten, but instead of attending a patissier's college, she went to an art college to master the beauty of desserts. After graduating from college, he moved from one famous store to another, winning numerous patissier competition awards.
When Ohana and his friends are struggling with the taste of the Mont Blanc to be served on the pre-opening menu, he recruits her to be the patissier of the restaurant. He gives Ohana and the others a taste of his own Mont Blanc, but Ohana and Rinko criticize it, saying that although it looks good, it tastes bad and does not match the concept of our menu, so they cancel their decision to hire him. After that, he researched Mont Blanc with Shohei, and the day before the pre-opening, he came to "Grand Maison Tokyo" and tasted Mont Blanc, which was approved by Ohana and others. He served Mont Blanc to 24 invited guests at the pre-opening and was praised by Linda. After the closing, he apologizes for his inappropriate comments and the identity of the new Mont Blanc, which he said as if he made it himself, saying that it was Chef Hirako's idea, not mine, and asks to be hired by "Grand Maison Tokyo" with the desire to "learn more," and is officially hired after Rinko approves.
Obana's proposal to name the restaurant at the food festival "Three Stars".

Freelance food writer → "Grand Maison Tokyo" hall staff → "Grand Maison Tokyo" sommelier
She speaks English and French. She is a certified sommelier and is familiar with domestic wines.
At the time she was a food writer, Linda asked her to get to the bottom of the nut-laden incident that occurred three years earlier involving Ohana.
She encouraged Grand Maison Tokyo and gaku to participate in the gibier competition, staging a showdown between the two.
At Kyono's invitation, she is assigned to work as a hall staff member at the Grand Maison Tokyo for a limited period of time as it begins to flourish, and her aforementioned language skills and qualifications make her an "immediate asset" to the company.
Her father was a diplomat and recommended "Escoffille" to him for the 2015 French-Japanese summit luncheon and it was implemented, but after the contamination incident he was taken to task and left in the cold. For this reason, Linda has pointed out that he hates the nut-laced incident perpetrators more than me, and she also remarked to Linda, in the absence of Ohana and others, that she would not allow the Escoffille people to start over in Tokyo.
When she learned the truth about the nut-laden incident, she thought about quitting the hall staff at Grand Maison Tokyo, but Rinko and Ohana recognized her abilities as a sommelier, and she decided to stay on as a sommelier at Grand Maison Tokyo.
Kamehito Aizawa (age 47)
Acted by Mitsuhiro Oikawa[4]
Web cookery researcher -> Chef of "Grand Maison Tokyo" department.
He once worked part-time at a bistro in Paris, which led him to a career in cooking, and it was during this time that he met Ohana, who joined him in setting up his own restaurant, Escoffille, where he worked as a chef.
Since his French wife disappeared following a nut-lacing incident that Ohana caused three years ago, he has returned to Japan with his daughter to live with his mother's family. After returning to Japan, in order to take care of his daughter Amelie, he began posting videos on a recipe website that he could do from home, which became so popular that he was dubbed the "nobleman of web recipes" and became a topic of conversation.
After supporting "Grand Maison Tokyo" until its pre-opening preparations, he planned to resume contributing videos to recipe sites, but decided to work at "Grand Maison Tokyo" on the condition that he would return home on time.
He is usually aloof, praising the food prepared by his friends with puns and casually dismissing Ohana's sudden references, but when Shohei confesses his own negligence, he comes at him with a swagger never seen before, and even after he enters the restaurant, he clearly says, "I still have no intention of forgiving you. He also has a half-French family, so he is even more of a gentleman than Kyono, using French in his replies and words.
He kept telling his wife Elise that he would quit the restaurant if it won three stars. When Elise comes to Japan, she promises to take over their daughter, Amelie, if Grand Maison Tokyo does not surpass the 10th place that Escoffille won for "Escoffille" in the Top 50 Restaurants. With "Grand Maison Tokyo" ranked 10th, Elise takes Amelie back as promised, and she and Amelie part ways. After leaving Amelie, he starts working full time.
He returns to France where Elise and Amélie are waiting for him after Grand Maison Tokyo wins three stars. He is the only person who left the restaurant after Grand Maison Tokyo won three stars in the regular terrestrial broadcasting only.
Rikutaro Kyono (age 49)
Acted by Ikki Sawamura[4]
'gaku' Garçon → 'Grand Maison Tokyo' Garçon.
He used to be a chef trained at the famous restaurant "L'Ambroisie" in Paris and was a senior colleague of Onaka and Tango, but when he tasted the food they prepared, he felt a "wall that could never be crossed" and realised the limits of his talent as a chef and switched to a garçon. He later became a co-owner when he and Ohana set up their own restaurant, Escoffille.
He was saddled with debt when 'Escoffille' was dissolved three years ago due to a nut-laden incident. She is invited by Tango to become a garcon at "gaku" in exchange for a shoulder to shoulder debt, but decides to become a garcon at "Grand Maison Tokyo" after having her debt cleared by Rinko.
He does not have a driver's licence. He has feelings for Rinko and is jealous of Ohana who gets on well with her. He can't stand the sight of her and Ohana cooking together at Rinko's house, so he confesses his feelings to Rinko and says he wants Ohana to leave the house as soon as possible. He starts living with Ohana from the end of episode 8. However, due to the above circumstances, Shohei becomes her housemate from episode 10.

Restaurant "gaku"[edit]

A high-end restaurant located in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. In the first episode, the restaurant succeeds in obtaining two Michelin stars, and the number of customers continues to increase. In the "Top 50 Restaurants" list, it was ranked 8th, higher than Grand Maison Tokyo. In the final episode, the restaurant plummets to no stars, but through the twists and turns up to that point, the bond between the chefs and Eto deepens, and the restaurant makes a fresh start.
Manabu Tango (age 45)
Acted by Onoe Kikunosuke V[4]
Chef. He has a strong rivalry with Ohana.
He once trained as a chef at "L'Ambroisie" in Paris with Ohana and Kyono. He set up his own restaurant ahead of Ohana, but the restaurant failed because "Escoffille," which was later launched by Ohana and Kyono, was awarded a star first. While in Paris, Eto scouted him out, and upon his return to Japan, he set out to reinvent himself as the chef of "gaku". The ingredients served at the restaurant are controlled to maintain optimum temperature and humidity. The meticulousness of this process is, according to Ohana, "the remnants of a scientific experiment.
Ohana and his team won the gibier competition in which they also participated, but they were shocked to learn that Eto had arranged everything behind their backs and that their victory was not entirely based on their own abilities. He tells Eto not to do anything underhanded in the future.
He appreciates Shohei Hirako's talent and welcomes him to "gaku" as a sous chef.
In episode 10, although he was able to cook a dish that broke out of his own shell, Eto has been appointed chef at Satoshi Yuzuki's "gaku," and Tango leaves the restaurant.
After Yuzuki abandoned his position as chef at "gaku" in the last episode, Kakitani informed him of the situation and he returned to "gaku. When he returned to "gaku" and ate Kakitani's cooking, he was impressed by how much he had grown and praised his cooking. He then vowed to rebuild "gaku".
Since Minegishi had been able to receive foodstuffs from "gaku" through Ohana's introduction, he repaid the debt by assisting with foodstuffs that did not reach "Grand Maison Tokyo" due to traffic congestion. Although their challenge with a menu that could have lost them a star did not pay off, the restaurant's unity was strengthened.
Satoshi Yuduki
Acted by Toru Baba (Appeared from Episode 10)
The chef was hired without Tango's knowledge by Eto and other chefs who believed that Tango's cuisine would not win three stars and would drop out of the top restaurants.
He was a sous chef at a two-star restaurant in France, so his cooking skills were good and his evaluations were accurate, but other chefs and employees disliked him because of his strict working conditions. In the last episode, he was boycotted by all the chefs and employees except Kakitani, so he took a large sum of money from "gaku" as severance pay for violating the terms of his contract, abandoned the restaurant, and voluntarily resigned.
Hikaru Kakitani
Acted by Yusuke Ohnuki[6] (Appeared from Episode 3)
Chef dept. at "Grand Maison Tokyo" (in charge of ingredient processing and fish dishes) → chef dept. at "gaku" → sous chef at "gaku" → chef dept. at "gaku".
In fact, he was a spy sent by Eto, and he intentionally left during the pre-opening of Grand Maison Tokyo without prepping the sea urchin, but this was not an action he took on his own, but a ploy by Eto to destroy Grand Maison Tokyo.
Serita prepared "Roasted Spanish Mackerel with Crystal Pomelo Sauce" while looking at the recipe written in the study notebook that Serita presented to Eto, but Eto harshly criticized him, saying it was "just grilled fish.
In episode 10, he succeeded Shohei and was promoted to sous chef. He was so frustrated with Tango's policies that he once decided to resign from the French cuisine industry, but decided to continue as a French chef by bringing in Yuzuki as his new chef.
In the final episode, when new chef Yuzuki returns after abandoning his restaurant, Tango compliments him on his cooking skills and is convinced that he has not worked hard enough to cook.
At "Glagla Maison Tokyo," he had a side love affair with Miyu, but in the end he and Shohei became good rivals, including owning his own restaurant.
Fumio Etoh
Acted by Toru Teduka
Owner. Born in Saitama Prefecture. Usually speaks in a fake Kansai dialect.
The company "Office Eats" produces various restaurants and has several stores. gaku" is one of them.
He is a schemer willing to use dirty tricks to turn "gaku" into a three-star restaurant, but he dreams of producing cuisine free from cost competition.
Toward the end of the restaurant's run, he gave up on Tango, who had lost his one arm, Shohei, and hired a new chef, Yuzuki, which contributed to the disharmony in the restaurant and nearly made it impossible to operate, but Tango's return saved the day. He also strengthens his bond with Tango, as he bites Minegishi to ask for ingredients (a deal is concluded partly because Ohana put in the groundwork for it).
In "GRAGRA MAISON TOKYO," he showed a side of himself that transformed into a middle-aged man who loves to talk about love and meddle when he is drunk.

She returned to Japan for the Top 50 Restaurants in Tokyo, where she will present her ranking at the announcement ceremony.
She was not going to let "Grand Maison Tokyo" with Shohei, the culprit of the nut-laden incident, get a Michelin star, but she was so impressed with the food served at "Grand Maison Tokyo" that she chose her pride as a gourmet chef over the damage to her career and admitted that it was worthy of three stars.

"Gura Gura Maison Tokyo (Shohei Hirako's wavered feelings)"[27] is a romantic comedy drama and spin-off drama of "Grand Maison Tokyo". It was distributed weekly on the video distribution service Paravi from midnight after the end of the main series. With Shohei Hirako as the protagonist, it depicts his growth and struggles as a chef, and his love triangle with his fiancé Miyu Ebina and his colleague Moe Matsui.[28]

In TBS Television (Japan) and Kanto region local, a digest version was broadcast every Thursday from 24 October at 1:28am – 1:33am (late night on Wednesdays, time may vary from week to week).[29] A digest version was available on TVer (streaming service) as an extra to the main Grand Maison Tokyo. This romantic comedy starring Tamamori had performed well, recording the highest number of views in the first month of distribution.[30]

The script was written by Okura(オークラ), who also works as a variety show writer and broadcaster.[30] According to Okura, he had previously mentioned that he wanted to write a comedy script, and when he was approached about this spin-off drama, it became a reality. He said it was fun to write the script while imagining what might have actually happened behind the scenes of the main drama.[30]

Story[edit]
