I Hate Sex was a Canadian screamo band from Edmonton, Alberta. The band formed in December 2014 and broke up in 2018. During the three years the band was together, they released one full length album, one solo EP and three split EPs.

History[edit]

The band was formed by Nicole Boychuk and Ashton Burns after meeting in university the year prior. The two realized they had the same goal of starting a band, so Boychuk reached out to social media to create a whole band. This is how Jibirl, who Boychuk slightly knew, and Curtis Burton, who was a total stranger, joined the band and I Hate Sex was officially formed. The bands first ever practice was on December 6, 2014 but the band almost always says that they formed in early 2015. During the initial practice, they wrote one by Metallica, and January 24th, two of the tracks that would end up on their debut EP Circle Thinking a few months later.[1]

A few months after Circle Thinking was released, on December 10, I Hate Sex released a split EP with another Edmonton band, Low Level. The EP contains a total of 7 tracks, with I Hate Sex on side B contributing three of the tracks. Only 60 copies of the EP were made, all being on red cassette tape. Pre-orders came with a trading card, a hand-written note of appreciation, and a picture of a Canadian landscape.[2]

In 2018, I Hate Sex broke up. They have never stated why they chose to break up. Despite the band dissolving many years ago, as of 2024, Boychuk is still active on the I Hate Sex Twitter page, often interacting with fan art, and occasionally sharing information about lyrics, memes, and other I Hate Sex related posts.[3]
