Laurence Zitvogel is a French physician-scientist specializing in oncology and immunology; her primary research experience is in exosomes and the biological impact of structural abnormalities on malignant neoplasms and anti-tumor therapy.

Personal life[edit]

Laurence Zitvogel was born in Suresnes, France on 25 December 1963.[1] She has worked with her spouse, Guido Kroemer,[2] since 2001.[3]

Education[edit]

Zitvogel earned her degree in Medical Oncology from the University of Paris in 1992, and received her Ph.D in Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the Gustav Roussy Cancer Center in 1995.[4] Zitvogel worked closely with Miriam Merad and was mentored by Jean-Charles Soria.

Research[edit]

Zitvogel became Director of Research for the University of Paris XI in 1998.[5] Her work focuses on intestinal bacterial flora.[6][7][8]

Her primary research objectives are to identify cell adhesion molecules that serve as actionable checkpoints for tumor surveillance.

Zitvogel directs a research group on tumor immunology and immunotherapy of cancer at the Institut Gustave Roussy[9] where her team has been focused on discovery and validation for antibody combination therapies.

Zitvogel’s team discovered how the immune system functions in response to chemotherapy. Her work has paved the way for the introduction of personalization into cancer medicine.

She uses a combination of histological and genetic assays. She characterizes Natural Killer cells in invading tumors and tests the mode of action for immunomodulators.

In her more recent work, she examines how enterophages impact tumor environments. [7]

She also practices clinical oncology at Villejuif where she is also the Director of the Department of Tumoral Immunology and Immunotherapy.

She conducts human clinical trials to test exosomes as immunotherapy for cancer patients. She is testing various tumor types and collaborating with major universities in the US.

Zitvogel is a professor at the University of Paris-Sud.[7]

Career[edit]

Zitvogel received the INSERM prize for research in clinical and therapeutic approaches to cancer.[10] She received the first European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) award during her lecture titled "Introducing the gut microbiome into the complexity of anticancer immunosurveillance" in 2017,[11] and the Baillet Latour Prize from Belgium in 2018 with her co-researcher Kroemer for their research on mechanisms of cancer immune surveillance.[12]

She also received the ASCO-SITC, the Brupbacher Award in 2017, and the ESMO Immuno-Oncology Award in 2017.

Jules A. Hoffmann, Nobel prize winner, described her as "one of the most outstanding personalities in the field”.[13]
