Norliza Mahalle

Norliza binti Dato Seri Setia Haji Mahalle is a Bruneian lecturer, author, researcher, and noblewoman who currently serving as Head of Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre at Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University. She is active in conducting research and contributions related to halal-based industries in Southeast Asia and often collaborates internationally with universities from several countries, such as Gadjah Mada University and Osaka University.[1][2][3]

Early life[edit]

Norliza binti Dato Seri Setia Haji Mahalle was born to Normah binti Ali Hassan and Mahalle bin Abdullah, a teacher who received Meritorious Teacher Award from Government of Brunei.[citation needed][4][5] She has a brother, Saifuddin Mahalle, and a sister, Salwa Mahalle.[5] Through her father, she is the fourth cousin once removed of Hassanal Bolkiah where they shared same great-great-grandfather, Pehin Khatib Awang Abdul Latif bin Awang Muhammad Taha.[citation needed] Mahalle's maternal grandfather, Ali Hassan bin Muhammad Edin, was an auditing clerk in Labuan who served from 3 January 1927.[6] She graduated from International Islamic University Malaysia majoring in Business Administration and earned her master's degree from Universiti Brunei Darussalam in the same major.[7][8]

Marriage[edit]

Mahalle is married to Asmawee bin Muhammad and has had two son, Muqri and Asyraf Asmawee.[5] They resided in Kampong Jerudong, and in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.[citation needed]

Academic career[edit]

Administrative positions[edit]

Mahalle started her career by serving as Head of Postgraduate Programme at Faculty of Business and Administration Science at Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) from 2015, followed by serving as Head of Undergraduate Programme.[7][9] She then served as Head of Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre and Human Resource at the university from April 2024.[8] Mahalle also served as Deputy Dean at Darussalam Gontor University.[citation needed]

Research[edit]

In 2020, Mahalle published a book titled Halal Logistics and Supply Chain Management in Southeast Asia where she wrote about the premier of halal logistics in Brunei Darussalam and explains the history of halal industry growth and how it led to the creation of Sharia logistical services.[10] On 21 December 2023, Mahalle held an International Symposium with Osaka University and representing UNISSA where they then agreed to cooperate in focusing sustainable development goals, potential long-term benefits of the halal industry, and responsibility in consumption and production.[1][2][3] The program ran for three hours and generated new knowledge about the challenges of implementation, regulation, and direction of halal industry.[1][2][3]

Mahalle actively doing a collaboration with universities internationally, among it were Gadjah Mada University, Osaka University, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Bandung Institute of Technology, University of Malaya, and Trisakti University.[citation needed]
