Donya Rad (Persian: دنیا راد; May 18, 1983) is an Iranian social media activist and script supervisor who was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Mahsa Amini protests.[1][2][3]

Arrests[edit]

In the days after death of Mahsa Amini and during the Mahsa Amini protests, Rad published a photo of herself and another girl without a hijab eating breakfast in a coffee shop in the south of Tehran and wrote:[4][5][6]

"We went to work, Javadiyeh, had breakfast and came back."[7]

This photo was well received on social networks and was reposted, with many considering it a civil disobedience and "a sign of the end of the era of compulsory hijab in Iran".[8]

On September 30, 2022, Dina Rad, Rad's sister, announced the arrest of Rad and her transfer to Ward 209 of Evin Prison.[9][10][11] She wrote on her Instagram:

"After the above photo was published, the security agencies contacted my sister -Donya Rad- and summoned her to give some explanations. After going to the appointed place, she was arrested. After a few hours of not hearing from the world, she told me in a short call that he was transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. Our family is very concerned about the health and safety of the world."[12][13][14]
