Uncle Billy's is a Chinese restaurant in the suburb of Northbridge in Perth, Western Australia.[1][2][3]

The venue has been described as a Northbridge 'institution', and is popular among those looking for a late-night feed in the area.[1] Its cuisine is in the Hong Kong style.

Description[edit]

The restaurant is situated in Perth's Chinatown Square. It is a popular eatery for revellers in Northbridge looking for Chinese food during the early morning hours.[2]

The food served has been described by a reviewer as 'authentic' to Hong Kong cuisine.[2][4] Around 100 different dishes are available for order.[5] Dishes that have been specifically praised by reviewers include the pork ribs with mayonnaise, the green kai lan in garlic sauce, and the sizzling Japanese Tofu with salted fish & chicken.[2][6]

The front of the restaurant is adorned by aquarium tanks containing Snow Crabs and Crayfish.[5] Decoration within the restaurant is otherwise minimal.[5] The entrance is adorned with photographs of the restaurant's owner with various celebrities that have entered the restaurant.

Reception[edit]

The restaurant has been described by reviewers as having decor that is 'nothing special', service merely 'humorously perfunctory', and the food not being 'what you'd call delicate'.[2] Nevertheless, professional reviews are generally on the favourable side.[2]

Praise for the restaurant tends not to be in relation to its food, or its quality. As one blogger has noted, the restaurant's popularity owes to the notions of 'reliability, consistency, and availability' especially for late-night revellers.[4]

The restaurant neighbours a similarly named Chinese restaurant; Billy Lee's. The similarity between the restaurant names has sparked a faux-rivalry in Perth culture; one that has been parodied by the Bell Tower Times.[3]
