"Maa"[a] is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language song sung by James, lyrics and composed by Prince Mahmud from the Mahmud's 1999 mixed album এখনও দু'চোখে বন্যা (Still two eyes flooded).[1]

Background[edit]

Composer Prince Mahmud's mother died in 1997. After the death of his mother, he stayed away from music for some time. Then after a few days few words of this song came to his mind, although he did not write them after writing the first two or three lines. Later in 1999, while working on the album Ekhono Du'Chokhe Bonna, he started working on this song again. Suddenly one day the writing was completed in a very short time, which was recorded at the Sound Garden Studio in Hathirpool. The rhythm that the song has now, it was not in the beginning, which has changed the music three or four times.[2]

After making the song, Mahmud thought, who will sing the song? Initially, he was thinking of having someone else sing the song. When James's mother died at that time, Mahmud thought of singing with James.[3]

Release[edit]

The song was released in a mixed album titled Ekhono Du'Chokhe Bonna in 1999, which became a super-duper hit for the song.[4]

Reception[edit]

The song received massive response from the audiences and became popular over the country, considered one of the greatest Bengali songs ever, making it one of James and Prince Mahmud's career classics. Also considered as one of the best songs sung about mother.[3][5][6] The song conquered the era and became unwritten in the history of Bengali music.[4]

Reaction[edit]

  • The late sound engineer Mobin heard the song in James's voice during the recording and said, "People will definitely like this song."[7]
  • After the release of the song, Khalid Hassan Milu asked composer Prince Mahmud, "Why didn't he give him the song."[8]
