Şêladizê (Kurdish: شێلادزێ, romanized: Şêladizê) is a city in Kurdistan and Head of a Subdistrict in Duhok Governorate in Amedi District, Kurdistan Region.

History and Etymology[edit]

It was originally a village belonging to the Doski tribe who settled there around the 19th century. The name of Sheladize comes from its geography where two rivers flow, the Avaşîn River and the Great Zab River. The word Sheladize(Şêladizê) comes from Şêl-a-do-zê it's mean Two Rivers in Kurdish. After the 1988 migration, the villagers of the surrounding tribes (Doski, Rekan) came to Sheladize and settled there. In 2012, Sheladize was recognized as a district of Duhok province. The population is now estimated at 50,000.

Current status[edit]

Sheladize is the largest district in Iraq in terms of population., Sheladize village is now located in the center of Sheladize as a large cultural archaeological site called Old Sheladize. Sheladize has a beautiful mountainous nature and tourism. Lots of interesting places and relaxing views. Sheladize also has its own Kurdish culture and dialect. The population of Sheladize consists of Kurds, and their dialects are of the Badini-Kurmanjin family. Many talented and famous personalities have emerged in Sheladize in different fields that have served the Kurdish people, culture and society.
