NPC SYSTEM is a French company that develops and supplies satellite tracking systems.[1][2] Based in Grenoble and founded in 2019, it is led by its founder Guy Ferraro.[3][4]

History[edit]

In the 1920s, the company Neyret-Beylier-Piccard-Pictet (NBPP) owned a pioneering research laboratory in the use of scale models for hydraulic systems. During the 1930s, the company NBPP-NEYRPIC was created to ensure the development of hydraulic testing equipment.

In 1948, the company Neyret-Beylier-Piccard-Pictet adopted the name Neyrpic by combining the four names.[5] 7 years later, in 1955, the Hydraulics Laboratory (LDH) became an autonomous entity, taking the name SOGREAH.[6]

In the 1960s, at the request of Compagnie Générale d'Electricité, NEYRPIC decided to get into satellite antennas. The mechanical design engineers and materials resistance experts succeeded in creating robust large diameter antennas. In 1969, the company also began designing tracking systems to control their antennas, the first satellite tracking systems, called AGAPS (Tracking System for Satellite Pursuit).

In the same decade, NEYRPIC was solicited by Électricité de France (EDF) to develop its first diesel generator control system for power plants in the DOM-TOM (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Réunion, Martinique and Corsica).

In 1967, NEYRPIC merged with its majority shareholder, ALSTOM, which continued to strengthen NEYRPIC's success by improving, manufacturing and distributing its products in three specialized markets: satellite tracking, thermal power plants and ship control systems.[5]

In November 2015, General Electric completed the acquisition of Alstom's electricity and grid businesses, encompassing the STM business unit based at its Grenoble hydroelectric site. In July 2017, GE unveiled a restructuring plan affecting its hydroelectric sector and impacting the STM commercial unit.[7]

Guy Ferraro and three other engineers, all GE employees, decided to submit a buyout offer for the STM business unit. In July 2018, GE accepted the Management Buy Out offer, thus giving birth to NPC SYSTEM. The transition was finalized on January 24, 2019.[8][9]

In June 2019, NPC SYSTEM opened an office in Bangkok, Thailand, to manage its operations in the Asia-Pacific region.[10]

In 2021, NPC SYSTEM joined the inovallée ecosystem.[10]

Activities[edit]

Thermal: NPC SYSTEM provides diesel regulation systems installed in EDF thermal power plants to ensure electricity generation.

Marine: The company designs steam control systems installed on ships of the French Navy.

Satellite: NPC SYSTEM is also active in the field of satellite tracking. The technology developed by the company makes it possible to accurately orient satellite antennas towards a satellite during transmission.[11]

Products[edit]

NEYRPIC® DTR500: Fully digital tracking unit used as a beacon receiver for step track and monopulse satellite tracking.[12][13]

NEYRPIC® ACU550: NPC SYSTEM microprocessor-based antenna control unit for tracking geostationary and low earth orbit satellites.

NEYRPIC® 5100: Complete satellite tracking system including control unit, tracking receiver, electrical cabinet, motors, position sensors, and limit switches.

NEYRPIC® ACU350/550 ADAPTOR: 3U adaptation rack integrating NPC SYSTEM's new ACU550 controller, developed to easily replace the old generation ACU350 controller.

NEYRPIC® ACS450T: Compact satellite tracking system designed for transportable L to Ka band antennas and for tracking geostationary satellites in stable or inclined orbit.

Notable clients[edit]

NPC SYSTEM equips nearly 900 antennas in 70 countries (including France, Spain, Italy, Norway, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates) and counts among its clients:

Awards and distinctions[edit]

In 2023, Guy Ferraro, founder and president of NPC SYSTEM, won 2 awards from the Business Worldwide CEO Awards: "Most Innovative CEO in the Satellite Industry" and "Science/Technology CEO of the Year - France".[14][15]

Sponsorship and philanthropy[edit]

In July 2019, NPC SYSTEM became a patron of the Grenoble University Space Center. This partnership allows the company to recover data (photographs of auroras) from nano-satellites developed by the CSUG.[16][17]
