Measure of Music (MoM) is a multiple day virtual conference for music industry professionals working in digital media, and is held annually online with hackathons in select cities. Formed in 2021, the globally focused conference is a free data tech conference and workshop aimed at fostering innovation and equity with the data sector of the music business.[1]

Measure of Music involves a series of panel discussions and keynotes by industry veterans, while hackathon participants simultaneously work for a 48 hour period to workshop a music data project that’s presented to judges.[2] Measure of Music is privately owned, but is supported by sponsors.[3][4]

Background[edit]

Development[edit]

Measure of Music was founded by first-generation Nigerian American[5], Christine Osazuwa, in 2020 during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It was created in response to a profound amount of outreach Osazuwa received from aspiring industry professionals for advice in advancing their careers.[6] At the time, Osazuwa was an executive at Warner Music Group, having previously held roles at Universal Music Group[7], and appointed positions at trade organizations like Keychange and shesaid.so.[8] Osazuwa was an active mentor to several tech startups, and nurtured her online audience of over 30K followers with career advice on LinkedIn.

The inaugural conference occurred on February 26, 2021, beginning as a three-day weekend program to give aspiring entertainment industry professionals an in-depth review of how the music industry uses data, followed by an invitation to apply what was learned during the conference to a project that would be presented in a competitive workshop at the end of the conference.[9][10]

Events[edit]

Because of its inception in 2021 in the cusp of the Covid-19 pandemic, Measure of Music began as a virtual conference with attendees, volunteers, and speakers representing 21 countries across 12 time zones.

The second Measure of Music conference took place from February 25-27, 2022[4] with 46 speakers, 16 judges, 12 sponsors, and it nearly doubled its spectators, hosting over 1,700 reregistered participants worldwide.[11]

In 2023, during its third year, Measure of Music hosted virtual spectators and also in-person hackathon participants in New York City and Barcelona.[3]Over 3,000 participants registered for the conference in 2023.[2]

The fourth Measure of Music conference took place February 24-26, 2024, online with over 2,100 registered attendees and also in Barcelona and Philadelphia.[12][13]
