The Gautam is an ancient clan found in Brahmins,[1][2] and Rajputs,[3] who claim descent from the mythical Gautama Maharishi.
They are primarily found in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, along with Rajasthan and Gujarat.[4][5]
The clan name Gautam means "descendant of Gotama or Gautam", "Gotama" meaning "one who has the most light,"[6] and comes from the fact that Kshatriya clans adopted the gotra of their house priests.[7][need quotation to verify]
