I Can See Your Voice franchise

I Can See Your Voice Malaysia is a Malaysian television mystery music game show series catering in Malay language, based on the South Korean programme of the same name. Since the show's premiere on 4 August 2018,[1][2] it has aired six seasons on two different networks — NTV7 (in 2018) and TV3 (from 2019 to 2023).

Gameplay[edit]

Format[edit]

Presented with a group of "mystery singers" identified only by their occupation, a guest artist must attempt to eliminate bad singers from the group without ever hearing them sing, assisted by clues and a celebrity panel over the course of several rounds. At the end of the game, the last remaining mystery singer is revealed as either good or bad by means of a duet between them and one of the guest artists.[a]

Rewards[edit]

The winning mystery singer is awarded on the following conditions:

  • If the singer is good:
    • From first to second season, he/she will perform again in the postseason encore concert.
    • From third to sixth season, he/she will have chance to get a potential contract and a single on any record label.
  • If the singer is bad, he/she wins RM3,000 (from first to fourth, and sixth season) and then RM5,000 (for the fifth season).

Rounds[edit]

Visual rounds[edit]

  • The guest artist is given some time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on their appearance. Afterward, a muted video of each mystery singer that reveals only 0.3 seconds of their singing voice is played as an additional hint.[b][c]
  • Each mystery singer is given two different identities — as a good singer and as a bad singer. Only one of them is a real identity.[d][e][f][g]

Lip sync rounds[edit]

  • Each mystery singer performs a lip sync to a song. Good singers mime to a recording of their own performance, while bad singers mime to a recording by someone else.[b][c]
  • The mystery singer lip syncs to the good singer's recording, then a bad singer's recording comes in the middle of the performance.[d][e][f][g]

Evidence rounds[edit]

  • The guest artist is presented with a video package featuring a "super fan" of one of the mystery singers.[c][d]
  • The host has randomly assigned clues about the mystery singer. The guest artist must choose a clue for each mystery singer.[d]

Rehearsal round[edit]

  • Three random panelists are wearing headphones to listen to a recording of assigned mystery singer that lasts for 15 seconds. Afterward, the panelist defends the mystery singer and convince the guest artist to choose them as the winner.[b][c][e][f][g]

Background[edit]

Production and development[edit]

Media Prima Berhad formally acquired the rights to produce separate, multilingual adaptations of I Can See Your Voice in Malaysia with 8TV assigning the Chinese-language version in April 2017, followed by NTV7 for the Malay-language version in June 2018, including with production duties assigned by Primeworks Studios.[5][6]

Filming[edit]

Tapings for the programme took place at Sri Pentas Studios, based at Plaza Alam Sentral in Shah Alam.

Since from third to fifth season, the programme was filmed under health and safety protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8][9]

Broadcast history[edit]

I Can See Your Voice Malaysia in the Malay-language variant debuted on 4 August 2018.[1][2] After the first season finale, the series has been already renewed for a second season[10] that also moved from NTV7 to TV3, premiering on 23 June 2019.[11][12] For the third season, the first part premiered on 16 February 2020,[13][14] continuing with the second part on 21 June 2020.[15][16] Regular episodes have started for the fourth season on 23 May 2021,[17][18] followed by the fifth season that has been already renewed after the finale of preceding one on 15 May 2022.[19][20] Coinciding TV3's 39th founding anniversary, the sixth season also celebrated its fifth anniversary, premiering on 4 June 2023.[21][22]

Special episodes and companion events[edit]

From its occasional airing in the third to fifth season, Eid al-Fitr specials were played by Ramlah Ram [ms] (from third season);[23] Floor 88 [ms] (from fourth season);[17][24] and Naim Daniel [ms] (from fifth season).[25]

The first two seasons held a postseason Encore Concert, featuring some of mystery singers returning to perform one last time.[26] Since the third season, it was then replaced by Online Concert, a digital companion event held after the season finale.[27]
