Rangamati Government High School (Bengali: রাঙ্গামাটি সরকারি উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়), also known as RGHS is a public government high school located in Rangamati Sadar, Rangamati. It is the first operating high school in Rangamati and Chittagong Hill Tracts. It was established in 1890 during the British Raj era. It has served as a great academic institution for more than 130 years.

The school is recognized as Secondary education institute and provides secondary education following the national curriculum. The school is known for being one of the most traditional and great educative schools in Rangamati. The exact location of this school is Old Police Line Road, Reserve Mukh, Reserve Bazar, Rangamati Sadar, Rangamati, Chittagong, Bangladesh. During the 1971 war, many of its students were killed. The school has created many great leaders, policymakers, and professional people. Both tribal and non-tribal students study in this school. It is co-educational.

History

Rangamati Government High School was established in 1890 during the British Raj era. Because of the lack of information not much is known about it. The school was redesigned and rebuilt in 2015.

Monogram and uniform

Monogram

"Gyan-E-Alo" (Bengali: জ্ঞানই আলো) or "Knowledge is light" is the motto of the school which appears in the monogram. This reflects the school's goal to lead students into light through education and make them excellent citizens for the country and the whole world.

White half shirt, white full pants, white socks, white shoes, and black belt. school monogram or batch in the pocket area. Long sleeve navy blue sweater in winter.

Buildings

Standing on a 13.16-acre total area, the school has 5 academic buildings. 4 of these buildings are used as classrooms. The other building is mainly for the school staff and the headmaster. The teacher's room is on the 2nd floor of one of the buildings. There are a total of 17 classrooms where classes are taken.

Playground

There is a big playground where students mainly do their daily assembly. Different types of sports such as Football and Cricket are played here. Sports matches between sections and sometimes even classes are played a few different times each month. Events such as annual sports are also held here.

Auditorium

There is a large auditorium on the northwest side of the school campus. The school auditorium is used for many different events such as prize giving, celebrating different days, organizing meetups, extra curriculum activities, educational purposes, etc.

Computer Lab

Located on the 3rd floor of one of the buildings, there is a computer lab where students complete their practical classes.

Library

The school has a library with more than 5000 academic books. Most of them were bought with coeval-sanctioned money during the establishment of the school. Others were bought with annually approved money. It is located on the 3rd floor beside the computer lab.

Canteen/Cafeteria

There is an official school canteen where students can buy food. Singara and Chotpoti are the main dishes. Besides soft drinks, paratha, piyaju, and chips are popular as well. There are also shops outside the school campus where students buy food items, especially after school.

Curriculum & Classes

Curriculum

The school follows the national curriculum and students read books provided by NCTB for secondary education. The syllabus is made by the school's teachers. The school falls under Chittagong Board as a secondary school. The secondary level offers up to S.S.C (equivalent to O level) examinations.

Classes

Previously the school had classes ranging from 5 to 10 but at present the school has classes ranging from 6 to 10. Each class mainly has 2 sections represented by letters of the alphabet (Ex. A, B, C, D). At Present all the classes from 6 to 10 are running.

There is a system for distributing Tiffin at the school during recess. ‘Singara’, boiled eggs, bananas, bread, sweets, local toasts, and other various items are served as Tiffin. Students pay a certain amount of money as Tiffin fees.

Shifts

The school operates on 2 shifts:

• morning shift
• day shift

Students either study in the morning or in the day shift. Morning shift lasts from 7 am-12 pm. Day shift lasts from 12 pm-5 pm.

School bus system

Since a very good amount of students come from different places all around Rangamati, the school provides buses for students as needed. Along with the official school bus, the school also has to hire local buses to pick up students. Students who use the bus have to pay for bus fees. Students must have a bus card to ride on a bus.

Publications

The school magazine Shotabdi was first published in 1897, but has not been published every year since then. A new school magazine Nirjhor was published in 2013.

Admission

Students are admitted through an admission test which is held in December. It is a written test that covers topics from previous grades. Students are selected in the final selection based on their test scores. Admissions into classes 6 & 9 are held officially. In some cases, other classes may offer admissions if seats are vacant.
