NGL, also known as NGL: ask me anything, is a multimedia messaging app developed by DeepMoji.[1][2][3] It was founded by Joao Figueiredo, Hunter Isaacson, and Raj Vir and launched in November 2021.[4][5] The app’s development team is headquartered in Venice Beach, California.[6][7][8]

NGL first launched in November 2021, eventually launching on the iOS App Store in December 2021 and the Google Play Store in May 2022.[8]

The app is named after the acronym for “not gonna lie.”[8][9][10][11]

NGL allows users to receive questions from their followers on social media platforms such as Facebook, X (Twitter), and Instagram.[9][8][12] It has no official integrations with Snapchat due to the platform revamping its policies to ban anonymous apps.[13][14]NGL is linked to users’ Instagram accounts and allows users to share links to its messaging boards through Instagram Stories.[15][16][17][18] Responses are collected through a link that opens in a browser where respondents can type their anonymous messages.[19] The app also allows users to ask for messages using specific verbal prompts accompanied by graphics.[15][17]

NGL is free to download, but also offers a “Pro” version with in-app purchases that give users hints about the identity of a message’s sender.[12][11][14][20] NGL’s revenue comes mainly from these in-app purchases.[21] NGL Pro has three subscription tiers.[20][21] The Pro version of the app also includes in-app games.[22]

NGL uses artificial intelligence from the company Hive Moderation for moderation of text, images, and audio content based on categories such as bullying and violence.[9][8][19][5] Moderation makes use of machine learning and rule-based character pattern-matching algorithms to filter harmful language.[23][11]
