William Sparrow Simpson (1828–1897) Anglican Priest and librarian.

William Sparrow Simpson was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, receiving his BA in 1851, and earning an MA from Oxford four years later.[1] He was appointed a Doctor of Divinity by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1873.[2]

Ordained priest in 1852 he carried out a curacy at St Mark's Kennington (1851–1856). In 1857 he became Rector of St Vedast Foster Lane with St Michael-le-Querne, St Matthew Friday-street, and St. Peter Cheapside, which he retained until his death. Much of his career was spent at St. Paul's Cathedral where he was a minor canon from 1861, Succentor (1876–1885), Junior Cardinal (1878–1881), and Sub-Dean from 1881.[1][3]

He was an active librarian of St. Paul's Cathedral from 1861, and was additionally made an Honorary Librarian at Lambeth Palace Library in 1870.[1] He was a noted antiquary and collectors of books and curiosities, and has been described as 'the best historian of St Paul's Cross'.[4]

He was the father of William John Sparrow Simpson, who published his father's memoir in 1899.[5]
