Blind Woman is a single by American singer and songwriter Zarah, also referred to as Zarah Maillard, and was released on October 27, 2023, as the lead single ballad from her debut LP of the same title, which she wrote and co-produced.[1][2]

The song is the second single that was officially released from Zarah's debut studio album, and the only rock ballad included in her LP collection. It has received critical acclaim, and was labeled by music critics as "a heavenly tune" and "a lesson in sonic alchemy."[3][1]

Background and release[edit]

Blind Woman is a haunting alternative rock ballad and the lead single in Zarah’s debut studio album that carries the same title,[2][4] and was released on October 27, 2023, independently through online music stores worldwide as the second single in the album.[5] The song takes listeners on a soulful journey through its powerful and vulnerable storytelling and production work.[3] It begins with a yearning mood, which is slowly built up by the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra in the background with a sense of poignancy throughout the song and instrumentation.[6]

The track was written and co-produced by Zarah and was recorded with musicians including the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra, and Chris Chaney,[7] a former Jane's Addiction and Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill tour album bass guitar player at the legendary Henson Recording Studios, formerly known as A&M in Hollywood where artists including John Lennon, The Doors, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, U2, Avril Lavigne, and Alanis Morissette have recorded their albums. In 2023, the final mixing and remastering of her debut LP took place at the McCartney Studios in Los Angeles.[8]

Critical response[edit]

In 2023, the Blind Woman single received critical acclaim from music critics, calling the song "a heavenly tune" and “captivatingly beautiful and moving” which mentions "her raw, organic, and vulnerable storytelling makes her rock music appeal to critical acclaim” and her lyrical content with “depth of lyricism” and performance of “gracious old-school vibe.”[3]

Others validated the single describing Zarah as “a captivating figure, capturing hearts with her soulful melodies and thought-provoking lyrics”[6] and “a lesson in sonic alchemy, she’s a siren of pure power and soul" further describing the song, "the yearning atmosphere drifts between the enticing tension in the instrumentation and her dynamic vocal range."[1]
