Urvija Kund ( Sanskrit: उर्विजा कुंड ) is a pond related to Goddess Janaki which is described in Ramayana, legendary stories and folk tales. It is believed that King Shreedhwaja Janaka had built a pond at the place where Goddess Sita was manifested, which later became famous as Urvija Kund.[1]

Description[edit]

According to Tribhuvan Dasji Maharaj, the chief priest of the Janaki temple at Janaki Sthan, the pond from where Goddess Janaki appeared is called Urvija Kund. There are two ponds in Sitamarhi, one is in Punaura Dham and the other is in Janaki Sthan. Both the ponds are sacred, one is the pond where Goddess Janaki was manifested and the other is the pond where Goddess Janaki was bathed. There is dispute and confusion between the two Kunds. According to some scholars, it is believed that Goddess Janaki appeared in the Urvija Kund of Janaki Sthan. Similarly, according to some other scholars, the Janaki Kund at Punaura Dham is the real Urvija Kund.[2][3] But presently, the Kund at Janaki Sthan in the city of Sitamarhi is named and called as Urvija Kund.[4][5] According to tradition, on the Vaishakh Shukla Shashthi, a 19 days Sitamarhi Dham Parikrama Yatra is started from Urvija Kund situated at Janaki Sthan with Janaki Doli, in which saints and devotees participate.[6]
