Vida Rabbani (Persian: ویدا ربانی), also known as Vahideh Rabbani (Persian: وحیده ربانی), is an Iranian women's rights activist and journalist. She was arrested by the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Mahsa Amini protests.[1][2]

Arrest and conviction[edit]

Arrest[edit]

On September 24, 2022, Rabbani was arrested following a house raid, in the context of the ongoing Mahsa Amini protests.[3][4] She was kept in solitary confinement in Ward 209 at Evin Prison, under the guardship of the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.[5][6][7]

Conviction[edit]

Rabbani was charged for her social media and journalistic activities, which in accordance with the application of Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code called for a six years prison sentence.[8][9]

On December 31, 2022, she was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison by Branch 26 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court.[10] She was sentenced to six years in prison on the charge of “gathering and colluding against national security" and fifteen months in prison on the charge of “propaganda against the state.”[11][12]

Imprisonment[edit]

On December 4, 2022, Rabbani went on a hunger strike.[5][13][14]

Medical furlough[edit]

On May 19 2023, Mizan News Agency, the official news agency of the Iranian judicial system), dismissed the urgency of her health situation.[15][16] On May 21, 2023, Rabbani was transferred from Evin prison to Ayatollah Taleghani Hospital for medical treatment.[17][18]

On June 4, 2023, Rabbani's husband stated that Evin prison continued to deny her access to medical check-ups.[19][20] On June 8, 2023, Rabbani was denied appropriate medical care.[21][22] Two days later on June 10, 2023, Rabbani’s lawyer announced that she was granted a medical furlough of ten days.[23][24]

Multiple groups have criticized the delay of Rabbani's medical care, including Front Line Defenders,[25][26] the International Federation of Journalists,[27] and American senator Bob Menendez.[28]
