In the 2014 Brazilian general election Motta was elected to the Chamber of Deputies at the age of 28 with more than 176,000 votes. In doing so he followed in the footsteps of his father, who had also elected federal deputy of Rio Grande do Norte.[1]

In December 2015 he was expelled from the Republican Party of the Social Order for criticizing misuse of party funds.[4] A week later Motta joined the Brazilian Socialist Party or PSB. In February 2016 Motta was elected president of the PSB for the state of Rio Grande do Norte by his party.[5]
