(This Discussion is) Off the Record is an interactive documentary work developed by journalist & director, Nirit Peled, in 2023.
Description[edit]
This 50-minute work was realized and produced in the Netherlands. It is a documentary performance based on a ten-year investigation into the consequences and risks of algorithmic profiling by the Dutch police. This subject is also the theme of the documentary Mothers by Nirit Peled.[1]
The documentary is trans-disciplinary, a cross between performance & visual arts production. The performance includes a section with journalist Nirit Peled, actress Janneke Remmers and human rights lawyer, Jelle Klaas.
This documentary was produced in both English and Dutch.
Spectators receive a booklet with anonymized documents from the survey.
Synopsis[edit]
The documentary looks back at an algorithm developed by the police and used as a risk assessment tool. In front of an audience, Peled presents individual people, both as humans and as data sets, to show how this algorithm works in situations based on real-life events. The people who suffer the negative consequences of this kind of profiling have no one to turn to; no one is accountable.[1]
The main characters are a journalist, a policeman, a human rights lawyer and 125 young people. Peled combines radical imagination with thorough research to ask these questions: Can a person's life really be captured in data? Who writes the script that dictates our lives?[2]
Subventions[edit]
(This discussion is) Off the Record received subsidies from the Film Funds DocLab Interactive in 2023.[3][4]
The project was granted with 10 000 euros to support its production.[5]
Presentation[edit]
The interactive documentary was presented to the[1] International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA)[6] in 2023. It was a nominee for the IDFA DocLab Competition for Immersive Non-Fiction Awards 2023, but did not win.
