The Witch and the Beast (Japanese: 魔女と野獣, Hepburn: Majo to Yajū) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kousuke Satake. It started serialization in Young Magazine the 3rd in November 2016, before moving to Monthly Young Magazine following Young Magazine the 3rd publishing its final issue. As of August 2022, its individual chapters have been collected in 10 tankōbon volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by Yokohama Animation Laboratory aired from January to April 2024.

Plot[edit]

The story is set in a fictitious magical world of eight continents with the world's most influential organization, the Global Holy Church, located on the First Continent in the west. On an isolated island between the seventh and eighth continents there is a bottomless pit called "The Fall" with seventeen levels, each with its own different independent world. The events are centered on Ashaf, a tall quietly spoken agent of the church and his partner, Guideau, who has the appearance of a girl, but whose masked and powerful alter ego is contained within a coffin strapped to Ashaf's back. They are tasked by the Order of Magical Resonance to bring rogue witches to account and they travel the country seeking a particular witch who cast a spell on Guideau and poses as grave threat to society.

Guideau (ギド, Gido)

Guideau looks like a girl, but she was originally a man whose appearance was changed by a witch's curse. She joined the Order of Magical Resonance to find the witch and lift the curse and reluctantly travels with Ashaf, helping him solve cases involving magic. She has an alternate form of a huge powerful masked man which can be released by kissing a witch.
Ashaf (アシャフ, Ashafu)
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa[3] (Japanese); Xan Cramer[4] (English)
Ashaf, a tall quietly spoken chain-smoking man with a coffin strapped to his back who works for the Order of Magical Resonance, part of the Global Holy Church's headquarters on the First Continent. He is partnered with Guideau whom he first met three years earlier on the Fifth Continent which was relatively untouched by magic. They travel from place to place, solving mysteries involving magic for the Order.

Hayden's police detective and Kiera's late boyfriend. One of the victim of the serial killings in The Witch's Pastime arc.
Shulk (シュルク, Shuruku) and Loran (ロラン, Roran)

A sergeant in the police force in a certain city. He contacted the Order of Magical Resonance for undead problems happened in the city. Appears in Beauty and Death arc.
Necromancer (死霊魔術師, Shiryō Majutsushi)

An unauthorized necromancer who resurrects people for his own ends. Appears in Beauty and Death arc.
Helga Velvette (へルガ・ベルベット, Heruga Berubetto)
Voiced by: Miyu Tomita[6]
A young witch with unique sword-like markings, or Ultoma in her right cheek. She is a descendant of Quena Velvette, one of seventeen Origins witches of the Dauntless Witches clan who kept a seal on the Demon Sword Ashgan which has the power to destroy the world. She is the sole survivor after the Executioners attacked the Dauntless Witches clan's refuge seeking the sword, forcing them to kill each other. Her sister sacrificed herself so Helga could to continue protecting the world from the sword's demonic power. First appears in The Witch and the Demon Sword arc.
Magic Sword Ashgan (魔剣アシュガン, Maken Ashugan)
Voiced by: Rintarō Nishi[6]
A one-eye talking sword which is one of the Demon Sword that can bring great calamity to the world. Currently in possession of Helga Velvette.
Matt Cugat (マット・クーガ, Matto Kūga)
Voiced by: Akira Ishida[6]
A high-ranking commander of Paladin Corps. He is a powerful "elemental" and he can manifest and control ice. First appears in The Witch and the Demon Sword arc.
The Executioner (処刑人, Shokei hito)
Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji[6]
An emissary of The Global Holy Church who led the attack by the Executioners on the Dauntles Witches' refuge seeking the Demon Sword Ashgan. He has the power of mind control through his Demon Hand Ishlingen which has the skins of seventeen ancient kings sewn onto it plus a royal ring. Appears in The Witch and the Demon Sword arc.
Farmus (ファーマス, Fāmasu)
Voiced by: Kōsei Hirota[6]
A middle-aged man who works as vice-commander of Matt's battalion in Paladin Corps.
Lowell (ローエル, Rōeru)
Voiced by: Yū Kobayashi[6]
A ginger woman who works as Matt's assistant in Paladin Corps.
Angela-Anne Huell (アンジェラ＝アン・フュール, Anjera An Fuyūru)
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa[7]
Known as the Eternal Witch and one of the Origins witches. The witch who's responsible for Guideau's curse. She's able to live past 200 years due to her body stealing ability on another person, including Guideau. Because of this ability, neither Guideau nor Ashaf know Angela's current appearance, therefore make it difficult to track her. First appears in the Origin Witch arc.
Falvell Farmington (ハルベル・ハーミントン, Haruberu Hāminton)
Voiced by: Mizuki Mano[8]
A descendant of the Origins witch known as the Mystic Witch, Luna Farmington. She became a mute due to an unknown witch's curse. Appears in the Eloquence and Silence arc.
Owent Farmington (オーエント・ハーミントン, Ōento Hāminton)

Manga[edit]

The series is written and illustrated by Kousuke Satake, and started serialization in Young Magazine the 3rd on November 6, 2016.[10] Following Young Magazine the 3rd publishing its final issue in April 2021, the series was moved to the new Monthly Young Magazine, starting on May 20.[11] The series went on an initial two-month hiatus after January 2023, that was later extended upon due to Satake's health.[12] The first tankōbon volume was released on September 20, 2017.[13] As of August 2022, the individual chapters have been collected in 10 tankōbon volumes.[14]

At New York Comic Con 2019, Kodansha USA announced they licensed the series for English publication.[15]

Anime[edit]

In August 2022, it was announced that the series would be receiving an anime adaptation.[35] It was later confirmed to be a television series produced by Yokohama Animation Laboratory and directed by Takayuki Hamana.[36] Yūichirō Momose is writing the scripts, Hiroya Iijima handling the character designs, and Hanae Nakamura and Natsumi Tabuchi composing the music.[5] The series aired from January 12 to April 5, 2024, on TBS, BS11 and other networks.[3][6][a] The opening theme song is "Soumonka", performed by Sokoninaru,[38] while the ending theme song is "Hikari no Trill", performed by Yoshino Nanjo.[39] Crunchyroll licensed the series outside of Asia.[40] Plus Media Networks Asia licensed the series in Southeast Asia.[41]

However the witch plans revenge on the anniversary of her mothers death and Ashaf and Guideau try to stop her. After Guideau in her young woman form is unable to defeat the witch, Ashaf unleashes her alternate form, a towering masked figure which beats the witch into submission.

Ashaf and Guideau spend time solving cases involving the misuse of magic, but Guideau is only interested in finding and defeating witches. A witch is committing serial gruesome murders in Hayden, capital of Pheres, possibly using a Grimoire, and they are assigned to investigate. The meet up with Ms Haines, a mage who has been engaged by the Hayden police to catch the perpetrator before the international Paladin Corps are called in. Haines agrees to work with them. Meanwhile the murders continue.
3"The Witch's Pastime: Final Act"

Following up on phrases left by the witch serial killer, Ashaf, Guideau and Haines investigate a bookshop but find the owner murdered in a gruesome way. Guideau refers to the current murder spree as a "Witch's Pastime" because she believes it's just a game to them. After the witch attacks Ashaf and Guideau they deduce the witch is somehow linked to Haines. They confront Haines who admits that the witch killed her children and then her lover, targeting those close to her. The Witch stages an attack on the police headquarters, but Ashaf uses his crows to follow her to her hideout. They discover that the perpetrator is in fact Haines's two adopted sons, Shulk and Loran who possess a two-volume grimoire, Sarnovasus. Although they claim the grimoire forced them to kill, they are unconvincing and Haines shoots them both dead. Ashaf takes the grimoire for safekeeping.
4"Beauty and Death: Opening Act"

Ashaf and Guideau intercept and stop an undead on a rampage who appears to have not been "maintained" by his necromancer. Ashaf calls in the Order's necromancy specialists, Phanora Kristoffel, accompanied by her servant, Johan. When Sergeant Jeff Enker explains that six undeads have recently gone out of control, Phanora suspects an unauthorized necromancer is responsible. Meanwhile, Phanora has activated a special lantern to attract undeads, and about forty of them converge on their location. She transfers the light to Johan, attracting the undead to him so that he becomes their target and he is forced to kill them. Phanora, Johan and Enker retrace the undeads' footsteps to a mansion in the forest where they are confronted by undeads under the necromancer's control, including Enker's dead fiancé. One undead slits Johan's throat forcing Phanora to enter the building and confront the necromancer to save hm.
5"Beauty and Death: Final Act"

Phanora and Enker enter the mansion to be greeted by the necromancer and a number of undead servants. She explains to Enker that the necromancer fundamentally resurrected them to achieve some personal objective, taking them out of the spiral of death and rebirth. By poorly maintaining them, if they die a second time, their souls will fall into the Void with no hope of ever rejoining the spiral. The necromancer explains that he desires Phanora's beautiful body to resurrect the decaying and badly burned corpse of his lover Mireille to her former beauty. When Phanora reveals that she is a witch, he brings forth a hoard of "combat model" undeads, however Phanora manifests her Death Knights who tear them to pieces. The necromancer flees, but is caught and tortured by Johan who explains he willingly became an undead at the hands of Phanora. As retribution for his misdeeds, Phanora kills the necromancer, brings him back to life and then tasks him with eternally maintaining all the undead he had previously resurrected as complete human beings.
6"The Witch and the Demon Sword: Opening Act"

Ashaf receives an assignment to investigate a series of killings in a city attributed to a witch. Meanwhile, Commander Matt Cugat of the Paladin Corps is also assigned to capture but not kill the witch and is assisted by an emissary from the Holy Church. He sends out the avatars of a team of Seekers from the Corps' castle fortress floating above the city but the witch destroys them. Ashaf also finds the witch and sends Guideau in to fight her, giving him enough time to cast a compression spell to confine her within a small ball. Ashaf recognizes her Ultoma, a witches mark on her cheek in the shape of a row of sword which marks her as a descendent of an Origin, the Dauntless Witch, Quena Velvette. Ashaf realizes that she is not the murderer, but suspects the real danger is Demon Sword Ashgan she possesses which has the power to destroy the world. Ashaf offers to protect her from the Paladin Corps and the sword itself agrees, but the witch refuses and she is soon confronted by Cugat's avatar.

Ashaf instructs Guideau to delay Cugat so the witch Helga Velvette can escape but he is more than a match for Guideau. After overwhelming her, he traps Helga and takes the Demon Sword Ashgan, imprisoning both women in magical armor. However, Ashaf intercedes, and suggests to Cugat that Helga was framed for the murders. Meanwhile, the Paladin Corps guards touch the sword which causes them to fight over it, until they are stopped by a Palladin commander. Suddenly, Guideau breaks free and grabs the sword and Helga, however Helga is pulled back and Guideau escapes with the sword, vowing to return for Helga.
8"The Witch and the Demon Sword: Act III"

The demon sword tells Guideau that only Helga can break its seal. Guideau finds Ashaf and the wounded Cugat who is now convinced that Executioners exist and that one has control of the floating castle. The Executioner soon arrives with the Paladin Corps and Helga under his mind control, aiming to posess the sword. He forces the Paladin Corps to kill themselves as a sacrifice and commands Helga to attack Guideau and seize the sword. The Executioner then draws the sword from its scabbard and stabs Helga thus lifting the seal and releasing the demon within it. Believing that he now controls the demon, the Executioner unleashes its destructive power causing devastation all around while Cugat uses his icy elemental power to protect Ashaf, and the wounded Guideau and Helga. Ashaf encourages Guideau to kiss Helga to revive her and he prepares to unleash the beast which is Guideau's alternate form.
9"The Witch and the Demon Sword: Final Act"

Guideau kisses a reluctant Helga which revives her. He then unleash Guideau's beast form which attacks the demon Ashgan assisted by Cugat's elemental power. Ashgan proves more powerful than they expected, but Guideau prevails and Ashgan is again imprisoned within the sword. Helga closes the seal and Ashaf asks her to join the Order of Magical Resonance but she declines because she believes maintaining the seal will take most of her power. The Executioner and his assistant attempt to rejoin the townspeople but Guideau incapacitates him and then Cugat imprisons them both in ice and takes them away to receive their punishment. Helga renews her role as the keeper of the seal over the demon sword, but their relationship has been dramatically altered by the recent events.
10"Origin Witch"

Helga goes with Ashaf to a magically hidden dorway leading into the headquarters of the Order of Magical Resonance, leaving the still injured Guideau outside with instructions to wait. However when Guideau overhears some children talking about a witch, she goes with them to a cottage to investigate, but only finds an old woman. Inside the corridor, Ashaf receives a black envelope, and races off. An Executioner arrives at the cottage and uses his cloak to take Guideau, the woman and children to another dimension. Suddenly, Angela-Anne Huell, the powerful Origin witch who cursed Guideau arrives. She takes the Executioner's cloak, kills him and leaves Guideau just clinging to life, but offers to leave clues so Guideau follow her. Ashaf and Helga arrive, but Guideau is furious that he intentionally left her in a weakened state and she attacks him, cracking his ribs. He apologizes and promises to protect her to achieve his ultimate objective which still remains unspoken.
11"Eloquence and Silence: Opening Act"

While healing his ribs, Ashaf recalls when he met Guideau three years earlier, on the Fifth Continent, far from the Global Holy Church's headquarters on the First Continent and relatively untouched by magic. At the time, he was investigating the evidence of a witch by dismembered cattle falling from the sky. He encountered the young mute witch, Falvell Farmington, a descendent of the "Mystic Witch", Luna Farmington. Suddenly, Falvell is attacked by a supremely powerful young woman carrying a coffin, who is later revealed to be Guideau. Ashaf deflects the attack, until a dark monstrous figure appears and easily casts her aside. It is revealed that this young woman has been cursed by a witch and so has Falvell. The spell took take away Falvell's voice to keep her from performing magic with speech. Ashaf is at a loss to explain what has been happening until the mayor is attacked and killed by the monster. He then realizes that an Executioner and his assistant are in town. He shoots the assistant, a young boy standing nearby named Craig, but the bullets have little effect. Meanwhile the Executioner himself leads a group of vigilantes towards Falvell's cottage.

As the Executioner and vigilantes arrive at Falvell's cottage and set it ablaze, Guideau presses Ashaf for information to lift the curse on her. He agrees to tell her if she saves Falvell. Falvell arrives home and finds her young brother Owent dead and is confronted by an Executioner, a man she trusted as a neighbor. Guideau arrives and saves Falvell but is badly injured by Craig. Ashaf's crows deliver him to the scene and delays the Executioners long enough for Guideau to kiss Falvell. The kiss lifts the curses on Falvell and Guideau, unleashing Guideau's monsterous alternate form which who deals a fatal blow to Craig. Falvell' magic is also restored, and after extinguishing the flaming cottage, she simply disintegrates the Executioner. Later, Falvell restarts Owent's heart and brings him back to life, but Guideau is frustrated that the removal of the curse on her was only temporary. Back in the present while healing his ribs, Ashaf tells Guideau that he needs to teach her about love. He takes her to a door in the Global Holy Church leading to the "The Fall" because the word "Angela" carved into an Executioner was in the language of Level 4 where vampires dwell called Orlencia Sett. They descend, obtain appropriate clothing and enter the level.

Reception[edit]

As part of Anime News Network's Fall 2021 manga guide, Rebecca Silverman and Caitlin Moore reviewed the first volume for the website. They both praised the art and concept, whilst also being critical of how the concept of the series is executed.[46] Sarah from Anime UK News also praised the artwork, while criticizing the characters.[2] Contrary to other critics, Che Gilson from Otaku USA praised the plot and setting in addition to the artwork.[47]

The series has over 500,000 copies in circulation.[48]
