The characters from the medieval fantasy television series House of the Dragon are based on their respective counterparts from author George R. R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel. Set in a fictional universe that has been referred to so far as "The Known World", the series follows a civil war for the Iron Throne of the continent of Westeros, fought between the rival royal and noble families and their respective supporters.

Main characters[edit]
Viserys I Targaryen[edit]
Viserys I Targaryen (portrayed by Paddy Considine) is the fifth King of the Seven Kingdoms.[6] While his cousin Princess Rhaenys had a better claim to the throne, a Great Council at Harrenhal voted Viserys to succeed his grandfather King Jaehaerys. His first marriage to Queen Aemma Arryn results in a daughter, Rhaenyra, and two miscarriages for sons. During the birth of the second son, Baelor, Viserys orders a C-section in an attempt to save his life, but both Baylor and Aemma die in the process. Viserys then proclaims his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir, defying his younger brother Daemon, and begins to groom her as his successor, informing her of Aegon's prophecy .[7] Viserys soon remarries to Lady Alicent Hightower, instead of the Velaryon's preferred choice Laena, and has four children: Aegon, Aemond, Helaena, and Daeron.[8] Later in life, Viserys becomes incredibely weak while suffering from a form of leprosy. A weakened Viserys is treated with Milk of the Poppy, making him delirious and bedridden.[9] While he is incapacitated, the Hightowers and their allies prepare to make Aegon the new heir, while Rhaenyra attempts to keep her father's wishes of making her the next Queen. Dying, and believing he is talking to Rhaenyra, he tells Alicent about Aegon's prophecy, but Alicent believes he is talking about the destiny of their son Aegon.[10]
Daemon Targaryen[edit]
Daemon Targaryen (portrayed by Matt Smith) is the younger brother of King Viserys.[11]
Rhaenyra Targaryen[edit]
Rhaenyra Targaryen (portrayed by Emma D'Arcy as an adult and by Milly Alcock as a younger Rhaenyra) is the daughter of King Viserys and eventual claimant to the throne.[12]
Otto Hightower[edit]
Otto Hightower (portrayed by Rhys Ifans) is the hand of the King to Viserys and father of Queen Alicent.[13]
Corlys Velaryon[edit]
Corlys Velaryon (portrayed by Steve Toussaint), also known as the Sea Snake, is the head of House Velaryon and husband to Rhaenys Targaryen.[14]
Rhaenys Velaryon[edit]
Rhaenys Velaryon (portrayed by Eve Best), also known as the Queen who Never Was, is the cousin to King Viserys who is revered by many to be the rightful ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.[15]
Mysaria[edit]
Mysaria (portrayed by Sonoya Mizuno), also known as the White Worm, is a peasant who rises in Flea Bottom to become an important information broker.[16]
Criston Cole[edit]
Criston Cole (portrayed by Fabien Frankel) is a member of the Kingsguard.[17]
Alicent Hightower[edit]
Alicent Hightower (portrayed by Olivia Cooke as an adult and by Emily Carey as a younger Alicent) is the second wife of King Viserys and mother to King Aegon II.[18]
Harrold Westerling[edit]
Harrold Westerling (portrayed by Graham McTavish) is the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.[19]
Larys Strong[edit]
Larys Strong (portrayed by Matthew Needham) is a schemer and confidant of Queen Alicent.[20]
Jason Lannister[edit]
Jason Lannister (portrayed by Jefferson Hall) is the Lord of Casterly Rock.[21]
Tyland Lannister[edit]
Tyland Lannister (portrayed by Jefferson Hall) is the younger twin brother of Jason and a member of the King's small council.[21]
Jacaerys Velaryon[edit]
Jacaerys Velaryon (portrayed by Harry Collett as an adult and by Leo Hart as a younger Jacaerys) is the firstborn son of Rhaenyra Targaryen.[22]
Aegon II Targaryen[edit]
Aegon II Targaryen (portrayed by Tom Glynn-Carney as an adult and by Ty Tennant as a younger Aegon) is the sixth King of the Seven Kingdoms.[23]
Aemond Targaryen[edit]
Aemond Targaryen (portrayed by Ewan Mitchell as an adult and by Leo Ashton as a younger Aemond) is the younger brother of King Aegon II.[24]
Helaena Targaryen[edit]
Helaena Targaryen (portrayed by Phia Saban as an adult and by Evie Allen as a younger Helaena) is the sister-wife of Aegon II who has visions of the future.[25]
Baela Targaryen[edit]
Baela Targaryen (portrayed by Bethany Antonia as an adult and by Shani Smethurst as a younger Baela) is the eldest daughter of Daemon and Laena and twin sister of Rhaena.
Rhaena Targaryen[edit]
Rhaena Targaryen (portrayed by Phoebe Campbell as an adult and by Eva Ossei-Gerning as a younger Rhaena) is the younger daughter of Daemon and Laena and twin sister of Baela.
