Brooke Makena Van Sickle is an American Filipino volleyball player who plays as an outside hitter for the Petro Gazz Angels.
Early life and education[edit]
Brooke Makena Van Sickle was born on March 22, 1998[1] in Hilo, Hawaii[2] to Gary Van Sickle and Lisa Bragado.[3] However, she would consider Battle Ground, Washington in the continental United States as her hometown.[2] She has Dutch ancestry from her father's side.
Her family has a history in volleyball, with her father Gary a varsity volleyball player for University of Hawaiʻi (UH) from 1988 to 1990 and her mother playing for Hawaii Pacific University.[3]
She herself would attend the University of Oregon and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.[3]
Career[edit]
Van Sickle would play for the volleyball teams of University of Oregon and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.[4]
After graduating, Van Sickle would briefly play for Cyprus-based team AEL Limassol.[3]
Petro Gazz Angels[edit]
Van Sickle would move to the Philippines in January 2024,[5] to sign with Premier Volleyball League (PVL) club Petro Gazz Angels.[6] She received endorsement from former player Lindsey Vander Weide. Van Sickle has been aiming to play in the Philippines since 2021 after learning about the sporting scene in the country from her friend Kalei Mau.[4]
She would also help her team win the title of the 2024 PNVF Champions League for Women where she would also be named the Most Valuable Player.[7] Shortly after, Van Sickle would make her PVL debut at the 2024 All-Filipino Conference.[8]
National team[edit]
Van Sickle expressed interest to play for the Philippine women’s national volleyball team and is processing her switch from USA to Philippines.[9]
Personal life[edit]
Van Sickle's roots to the Philippines traces to as far as her grandfather who hails from San Emilio, Ilocos Sur.[4][10] She also has Philippine and United States citizenship.[11]
