Season chronology

The first season of Escape the Night premiered on June 22, 2016, through YouTube Red. The premiere season showcased a total of ten guests invited to The Savant's party and required them to act and dress as various personas from the Roaring Twenties. Once there, isolated from the outside world and tasked with surviving the night and escaping the historical era.

Production

In October 2015, the subscription service formerly known as YouTube Red, revealed upcoming projects such as Fight of the Living Dead, A Trip to Unicorn Island (2016), Single by 30, and Scare PewDiePie. This also includes an untitled Joey Graceffa project that involves a murder mystery. A year later, the subscription service teased clips of their upcoming murder mystery series. Sam Gutelle, a writer from Tubefilter, described the potential series as "the board game Clue" which turns the party "into a whodunit, with each guest transformed into a suspect." Joey Graceffa, the creator of the series, revealed in a Teen Vogue interview that "the idea for the project has been in the works for two years, and that he most looked forward to collaborating" with other YouTubers.

Joey Graceffa received the heir to his relative's estate. He wrote and sent ten of his friends invitations to a housewarming dinner. The invitation required the guests to wear a certain style relating to the Roaring Twenties, any objects pertaining to the Modern World will disappear. The guests arrived at The Savant's estate by a time-traveling automobile. As dinner started, both The Journalist and The Renegade discovered the estate's maid dragging a dead corpse upstairs and went back downstairs and joined the other guests. Shane received a letter, with the maid serving the main course, The Renegade started to cough up blood and was eventually poisoned. The host and the guest had fifteen minutes to find clues and solve puzzles to unlock the three antidotes to save Shane. Unfortunately, Shane passed away, and was later found out that the House of Evil poisoned him. The guests tried to escape, but the time-traveling automobile exploded, leaving them stuck in the 1920s.

With the automobile exploding, the guests went back to the estate and realized that they had to find clues and retrieve the artifacts. In the library, the guests found clues throughout the books which revealed a pin number, and opened the locked chest that contained chess pieces which led to the next clue. The clue involved another set of numbers and air, earth, fire, and wind. This opened a locked bookcase with another the final task leading to the estate's basement. The guests decided to write down their opponent's name to complete the final task. The two chosen names were The Fixer and The Hustler. Andrea chooses Justine, and Lele chooses Eva as their partner. Their chosen partners had to complete a series of tasks involving the wiring and piping. Eva finished the tasks and Lele escaped the Ungodly Machine; with the tasks completed, they received the first artifact. Unfortunately, Justine did not complete the tasks and Andrea died in a tank filled with poisonous gas.

A note revealed that one of the guests is evil. Joey found an image of a woman and discovered that the guests needed to find the woman's personal belongings and perform a seance to speak the dead. They decided to rip the image which opened a jewelry box that contained three keys to three doors in the estate. The guests found a red scarf, emerald earrings, and a blonde wig; this opened another jewelry box containing a set of instructions to perform a seance. Another clue was revealed, the guests needed to find a key that unlocks Caroline Eastwick's buried coffin and release her trapped soul. When they found the coffin, Eastwick's body was missing but a note was found. The final task requires one of the guests to be buried alive in the coffin against their own will. The guests voted, and unfortunately, Justine's name was chosen to be buried alive. Her screaming stopped and the second artifact was revealed; a mysterious box was discovered which led the next task.

As the guests were stumped on the box, The Jazz Singer started to accuse Joey of the evilness in the estate. Oli decided to smash the box into the table which revealed a paper stating the word "idle". The clock had the next clue and they needed to move the four hands in the order of the word from the alphabet. A locked compartment with a keyhole and an image of stairs was revealed. Meanwhile, Tim and Sierra discovered an automobile outside of the estate which led to a separate task. Joey found a key at the staircase which opened a secret room filled with dressed-up mannequins. Tim and Sierra opened the trunk of the automobile and found a mannequin tied up; they showed the rest of the group what they had found and opened the next clue. The clue states that the two chosen guests need to participate in a perverted game, which is Lele and Joey. As they completed the game, their final task was to write one of the guest's names in the Murder Journal. Unfortunately, GloZell choked on her own blood and died; the third artifact was revealed.
