Record of Ragnarok is an anime television series based on the manga series of the same title written by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui and illustrated by Azychika. In December 2020, it was announced that the series would receive an anime series adaptation produced by Warner Bros. Japan and animated by Graphinica. It is directed by Masao Ōkubo, with series composition by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, characters designs by Masaki Saito and music composed by Yasuharu Takanashi. Licensed by Netflix, the series premiered on June 17, 2021, on the streaming service.[1] The opening theme is "Kamigami" (KAMIGAMI-神噛-, lit. "Gods" / "God Biting") performed by Maximum the Hormone,[2] while the ending theme is "Fukahi" (不可避, lit. "Unavoidable") performed by SymaG.[3] In North America, the first season has been licensed for home video release by Viz Media and was released on Blu-ray on April 4, 2023.[4]
On August 17, 2021, it was announced that the series was renewed for a second season.[5][6] The main staff returned from the first season, with Yumeta Company producing the series alongside Graphinica, and Yuka Yamada writing the scripts alongside Fudeyasu.[7] The season consists of 15 episodes, with the first 10 episodes premiering on January 26, 2023, and the remaining five releasing on July 12 of the same year.[8][9] The opening theme is "Rude, Loose Dance" (ルードルーズダンス, Rūdo Rūzu Dansu) performed by Minami, while the ending theme is "Inori" (祈, lit. "Prayer") performed by Masatoshi Ono.[10]

At the Council of Valhalla, the gods had gathered after a 1000 years since the last meeting and decide that humanity is irredeemable and must be destroyed. Brunhilde, leader of the Valkyries, objects to the decision and proposes that the gods demonstrate their mercy and power by testing mankind. Brunhilde convinces the gods to hold Ragnarok, a competition where thirteen humans and thirteen gods fight in one-on-one battles to the death and the first to achieve seven victories wins, with mankind spared for another 1000 years should they achieve victory. For the first battle, the first representative of the gods is the strongest Norse god and God of Thunder, Thor, while the human representative is the most powerful of all Chinese heroes, Lü Bu and their fight begins with both opponents fighting at full force. | |||||||

The gods are surprised that Lü Bu forces Thor to fight him seriously and reminisce about the Norse god's greatest feats while details of Lü Bu's past are also revealed, including the fact that unlike the official story, Lü Bu surrendered to his enemies after realizing that there is no one else strong enough to fight him. When Lü Bu's weapon deflects Thor's Hammer, the gods realize that Lü Bu is also equipped with a divine weapon, while Brunhilde gathers the 13 Valkyries to assist the humans in Ragnarok. | |||||||

Before Ragnarok, Brunhilde calls the fourth sister, Randgriz, and orders her to help Lü Bu by transforming into a sacred weapon for him. As Lü Bu manages to injure Thor again, Zeus confirms that the Valkyries are rebelling against the gods, but is thrilled by the challenge it brings. After Lü Bu's death, his army led by Chen Gong and Red Hare charge at Thor, who kills them in respect for his fallen opponent. Göll, the youngest of the Valkyries, learns from Brunhilde that both Lü Bu and Randgriz's souls were destroyed, thus they cannot be revived. Angry that Brunhilde does not show any sadness for their sister's fate, Göll reprimands her, but Brunhilde yells at her stating that you cannot slay a god if you act sad. Brunhilde chooses Adam, the father of all mankind as the human representative for the second match, but while Shiva, the strongest Hindu god was originally chosen as his opponent, Zeus steps in and assumes his place, much to Brunhilde's surprise. | |||||||

Zeus convinces Shiva to give up his turn to Zeus and Adam is equipped with a knuckleduster with the spirit of the seventh Valkyrie, Reginleif, while Zeus decides to fight barehanded. As Adam keeps overpowering Zeus, Brunhilde comments Adam's strength comes from his rancor, his hatred for the gods, revealing that both he and his wife Eve were banished from paradise after Eve was falsely accused of eating the forbidden fruit, accepting their exile after killing The Serpent for incriminating Eve after she refused his advances. Zeus assumes his ultimate form, Adamas form, and evens the odds against Adam. However, Adam eventually adapts to his opponent's strength and regains the upper hand, but just before Adam deals the finishing blow on Zeus, he dies from exhaustion, his soul vanishing along Reginleif's. Despite being defeated again, the humans in the audience celebrate Adam's example and express their will to defy the gods and win the Ragnarok. Poseidon begins the third match armed with his trident against Kojiro Sasaki equipped with a sword with the spirit of the second Valkyrie, Hrist, but neither take a step, as Kojiro fails to find any opening in Poseidon's defense and realizes that he will be killed should he attack carelessly. After Brunhilde tells the story of how Poseidon killed his older brother Adamas for rebelling against Zeus and deeming him a coward when he refused to join Adamas' army, Kojiro gives up from taking the first move against Poseidon and sits on the ground. | |||||||

Poseidon eventually steps up his attacks against Kojiro, injuring him and eventually breaking his sword in two. After reminiscing about his famous encounter with Miyamoto Musashi, Kojiro decides to keep fighting and the broken sword is reforged into two new swords, reflecting Hrist's dual persona and turns the tables against his opponent. | |||||||

Poseidon decides to stop trying to outsmart Kojiro and attacks him with fast and direct strikes, albeit much faster. However, Kojiro uses all of his skills to counter Poseidon's moves and slices him in four, winning the match. Both humans and gods are surprised with mankind's first win. Zeus admits that mankind is indeed strong and that Brunhilde truly intends to defeat the gods, thus they need to take Ragnarok seriously and decides to send another Greek god to enact their revenge. Hercules is chosen as their representative for the fourth match, while Brunhilde sends Jack the Ripper against him, which astonishes the entire audience due to the latter's reputation as mankind's most devious murderer. | |||||||

Before the fourth match, Brunhilde and Göll greet their old friend Hercules and they wish each other luck. Hercules tells Loki that after he wins, he plans to ask the gods to spare humanity. In the interest of fairness, Hercules agrees to Jack the Ripper's request to make the arena a replica of 19th century London. Hercules offers to spare Jack if he surrenders, but he refuses and draws a giant pair of scissors. Jack infuriates Hercules by running away and setting booby traps. Hercules shatters the scissors, so Jack attacks him with knives and cuts him, revealing his weapon is a magic bag that produces divine weapons able to injure gods. Hercules uses the power of the Nemean Lion to knock Jack back, but he says he is far from finished. | ||||||||||||

The spectators notice that the tattoos on Hercules have grown significantly — and if they continue to grow, the hero will suffer a painful death. Ares explains they are the price to use the power from the Twelve Labors and reminisces on his past. Born Alcides, he was a weak boy who dreamed of fighting for justice. When Ares attempted to wipe out his hometown of Thebes, Alcides consumed ambrosia to obtain godly strength and fight him. Zeus stopped the fight and invited Alcides to join the gods, which he accepted and renamed himself Hercules. Jack triggers booby traps with piano wire and more knives to injure Hercules until he uses the power of the Stymphalian Birds to blow the knives back at Jack and injure him. Jack looks at Hercules' aura and wonders what color it will turn when he dies, then creepily sings "London Bridge is Falling Down". | ||||||||||||

Jack's past is shown. He was the son of a prostitute named Mary who was born with a special right eye that lets him see people's auras and emotions. Despite living in poverty, Jack grew up happy because he was comforted by how brightly his mother's love shone. When his rich father broke his promise to come back and marry her by marrying another woman, Mary started treating Jack with disdain. He realized that the color he saw around Mary was not maternal love for him, but rather her own selfish love for the high life she had birthed Jack to secure for her after aborting all of her other pregnancies. Jack eventually killed Mary, tracked down and killed his father for abandoning them, then killed more people after becoming obsessed with the color of fear when he saw it while defending himself from Mary's abuse. Back in the fight, Hercules knocks down Big Ben. Jack hurls the clock at him and shocks everyone when it slices off Hercules' left arm. Jack reveals his true weapon is his gloves that turn anything they touch into a divine weapon. A flashback shows the eleventh Valkyrie, Hlökk, refused to work with Jack when Brunhilde asked, only for Jack to overpower and force her to transform into the gloves. Göll is shocked that they would go this far for victory. | ||||||||||||

Although he has lost his left arm, Hercules remains steadfast, easily summoning the strength to unleash his ultimate move: the Twelfth Labor, which fuses his body with Cerberus. Jack is amazed to see love in Hercules. Zeus explains Hercules must finish the fight before the strain of the Twelfth Labor kills him. Hercules tears through anything Jack tries to use as a weapon, then punches him so hard he gets impaled on a fence. Jack gets up and topples a building on Hercules, but he lifts it off him. They continue fighting with Jack bleeding profusely from his wound. When Jack gets knocked down again, the humans express disappointment while his childhood friend Anne is the only one cheering for him. To everyone's amazement, Jack gets up. | ||||||||||||

Jack uses his gloves' power on his own blood and uses it to fatally impale Hercules. Hercules uses his final moments to embrace Jack, declare his platonic love for Jack and humanity, and urge humanity not to give up. Hlökk returns to normal, teaches Jack that he is feeling sad for Hercules' demise as he was the first person besides Anne to show him real love, and leaves. As Jack limps out of the arena, the gods angrily pelt him with rocks while the humans except Anne refuse to cheer for his victory. Göll cries and reprimands Brunhilde for not being sad, but in private, Brunhilde cries while adding Hercules' image to a shrine for the fallen warriors, purposefully enshrining him with the humans instead of the gods. Ares and Zeus leave to vent their anger over Hercules' demise. Loki meets Buddha and voices his suspicions that Buddha taught the Valkyries how to transform into divine weapons, accusing him of treason. The Seven Lucky Gods appear and say they have been waiting for an excuse to kill Buddha, but Buddha stabs member Ebisu in the hand. The Seven Lucky Gods and Loki prepare to attack, but Kojiro Sasaki, Soji Okita, and Isami Kondo show up to defend Buddha. | ||||||||||||

The three swordsmen hold their own against the gods until Zeus and Odin force them all to stop and return to their rooms. To capitalize on humanity's momentum, Brünnhilde pays a visit to the colossal Raiden Tameemon, the most powerful sumo wrestler in history. His partner will be the third Valkyrie, Thrud. Raiden falls in love with her because of her size and muscles, amazing her since those qualities usually turn men off. For the fifth match, the arena is arranged like a sumo ring. After Raiden is introduced, his opponent is revealed to be the god Shiva. | ||||||||||||

Raiden shocks Shiva by being strong enough to hurt him with punches and kicks. Ever since he was a child, he was so strong that he would regularly break his own bones from the force of his muscles alone, until he was able to place seals to limit his strength. Realizing his current strength is not enough, he unlocks the seals as Brunhilde explains that Thrud transformed into his mawashi which gives him the ability to use his full strength without hurting himself. Raiden unleashes devastating blows on Shiva. Shiva counterattacks, but Raiden breaks one of his four arms, shocking the gods. They continue to fight as Shiva remembers his old friend, Rudra. | ||||||||||||

Years ago, Shiva spent many happy days with his best friend Rudra. Then one day, Rudra asks Shiva to join him on a journey to the top. They defeated every Hindu god they met, gaining their titles and authorities. When they had defeated them all, Rudra challenged Shiva to see which of them was the strongest. Shiva reluctantly defeated him, gaining the authorities of 1116 gods, before Rudra left. Rudra appears in the audience to cheer Shiva on. Shiva performs a war dance and attacks Tameemon too fast for him to react. Shiva's body catches on fire from the friction of his extreme speed and he lands a kick that burns out Raiden's left eye. However, he refuses to quit. | ||||||||||||

As a child, Raiden had to suppress his full strength so he would not hurt other people. He became a sumo wrestler to earn money for his starving village, but never had the chance to fight with his full strength. Raiden unleashes a palm strike so powerful that it slices off two of Shiva's arms when he tries to block it, leaving him with one functioning arm left. However, Raiden's muscles are damaged by the strain of pushing them so hard. Shiva is amazed to see Rudra in the audience, having not seen him in millennia, and is inspired to do his best. He starts using up his own life force to power himself, turning red as his body burns. | ||||||||||||

The battle turns into one of endurance as Raiden's muscles are deteriorating while Shiva's body is burning. Eventually, Shiva destroys Raiden's arm. Raiden realizes he cannot win now and asks Thrud to separate from him so she will not die, but she says she loves him and will share his fate. Shiva decapitates him, killing Thrud as well, and praises him as a worthy opponent, expressing amazement that he never managed to knock Raiden down the entire match. Shiva limps out of the arena and tells the gods that humans are strong. Göll is heartbroken by Thrud's death while Brunhilde adds Raiden's image to the shrine and cries. Zeus asks Buddha to fight in the sixth match and he agrees. Göll goes to the infirmary to find bandages for a cut Brunhilde got when she punched a wall. She overhears Ebisu getting his hand treated and plotting revenge against Buddha. The other Seven Lucky Gods spot and surround her, about to attack when Jack the Ripper shows up and offers tea. Buddha steps into the arena for the sixth match, but shocks everyone by saying he is fighting on humanity's side. | ||||||||||||
