Paolo Parisi (*August 23, 1965 in Catania)[1] is an Italian artist and professor of art.

Life and work[edit]

Paolo Parisi was born in Italy in 1965 in the Sicilian port city of Catania.[1] His career as an artist began in the 1990s after he graduated in painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.

In 1998, together with Antonio Catelani, Carlo Guaita, Paolo Masi, Massimo Nannucci and Maurizio Nannucci, Paolo Parisi founded the non-profit art space BASE / Progetti per l'arte in Florence where until 2023 more than ninety exhibitions have been realized and shown.[2]

By using different media such as painting, sound and light, Paolo Parisi explores in his practice the possibility of the existence of painting in the so-called "expanded field". In this way he opens a physical dimension to the visual experience.

The artist's works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy, and also in other countries, including Germany, France, Japan and in China. His first solo exhibition in a museum outside Italy was held in 2006 at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus and Kunstbau Munich with the title Observatorium (Against the Stream).[3] For this exhibition, he conceived a synthesis of his work directly related to the exhibition spaces of Lenbachhaus, highlighting the different aspects of his entire oeuvre.[4]

Since 1993, Parisi has combined his profession as an artist with teaching activities at art academies in Italy and abroad. Thus, from 1993 to 2010, he taught Art at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna.[5] Since 2010, Parisi has held a professorship at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.[5] Since 2023, he has also been Vice Director of the Accademia di Belle Arti.[6]

Paolo Parisi lives and works in Florence.[5]
