"Tell Ur Girlfriend" is a song by American rapper and singer Lay Bankz released through Artist Partner Group on February 7, 2024.[1]The track emerged as her commercial breakthrough charting in several countries including the US, where it debuted at 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and in Canada where it debuted at 64.[1][2]

The song garnered instant success on TikTok thanks to a viral dance craze as well as being used in over a million videos by April 23, 2024.[1] She performed the song at Rolling Loud California 2024 on March 15, 2024.[3][4]

Background and composition[edit]

The song was released on February 7, 2024. The track is a R&B and Jersey Club song with a tempo of 135 bpm which runs for 2 minutes and 4 seconds. Bankz sings about being in a relationship with another boy, who also has a girlfriend.[5][6]

It subsequently went viral on TikTok aided by a viral dance trend. The song followed a string of viral successes by Bankz on the platform including "Na Na Na", "Doo Doo Blick" and "Ick", the latter of which garnered over 90 million streams on Spotify.[7]

Critical reception[edit]

"Tell Ur Girlfriend" received mainly positive reviews from critics. Uproxx called it "a single that is wildly infectious and begs for a few listens before moving on to something else."[8] The Garnette Report said it added "layers of serrated synths and space-age squelches of turn-of-the-millennium R&B atop the sliding 808s of drill and insistent five-beat pattern of East Coast Club to create a futuristic, dancefloor-filling anthem."[7]
