East Mining Company (EMCO), written in Russian Vostochnaya Mining Company (VGK) is the coal mining enterprise in Sakhalin Oblast with a full cycle for the extraction and shipment of solid fuel. The company's key production assets are Solntsevsky Coal Mine LLC, Coal Sea Port of Shakhtersk LLC and North-Eastern Coal Company LLC. At the end of 2016, the company was ranked 26th among the largest coal mining companies in Russia.[3] The company is one of top-10 coal exporters in Russia.[4]

About the company[edit]

The structure of East Mining Company includes mining (Solntsevsky Coal Mine LLC, North-Eastern Coal Company LLC) and logistics assets (Coal Sea Port of Shakhtersk LLC).[5][6][7] It is engaged in the extraction and shipment of brown and black coals of 3B and D grade as well as anthracites, natural thermoanthracites and hard coals of coking of GZh, Zh, K grades.[8] In 2016, the production volumes amounted to 4 million tons, and shipment volume reached 3.1 million tons.[9]

East Mining Company supplies the entire Sakhalin Region with coal and also exports its products to Japan, China, Taiwan, the Philippines, and India.[10] In 2016, the company took 11th place in the list of the largest exporters of Russian coal.[3] In 2017, the company planned to export 4.5 million tons of coal, which is almost 45.2% more than in 2016.[11] At the end of 2017, the company took 13th place among the largest Russian coal exporters, exporting 4.9 million tons of coal.[12]

In 2013, the company launched a projectto increase coal production at the Solntsevsky Coal Mine and upgrade the Port of Shakhtersk.[13] As part of the project, the coal conveyor is being builtwhich connects the Solntsevsky Coal Mine with the coal sea port of Shakhtersk. It will significantly reduce the load on the road network of the Uglegorsk region and increase Sakhalin coal exports to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.[14][15][16] In 2016, the port set a record for the daily shipment of 31000 tons.

It is planned to build a single-point mooring with a length of more than 1 kilometerin the port. It will allow getting away from the road loading of vessels. The port will operate year-round, and the volume of coal shipped for export will increase.[17] In December 2016, in Tokyo, East Mining Company entered into a cooperation agreement with Sojitz Corporation. In September 2017, the company began to cooperate with Marubeni Corporation.[18][19] Due to the modernization of production facilities, East Mining Company plans to increase coal production to 10-12 million tons per year.[17][20][21][22][23]

The company is actively engaged in the solution of environmental issues.[24][25][26]
