Reinhold Friedrich (born 14 July 1958) is a German trumpeter and university lecturer in Karlsruhe.

Early Life[edit]

Reinhold Friedrich was born on July 14, 1958 in Weingarten.

Education[edit]

Friedrich was taught by Edward H. Tarr (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Basel) and Pierre Thibaud (Conservatoire Superieure de Musique Paris).

Career[edit]

Friedrich debuted in 1982 at the Berliner Festwochen, performing Luciano Berio's Sequenza X. Following his debut, Friedrich made his first appearance as a soloist in a historic performance on the keyed trumpet at the Musikverein in Vienna with the Vienna Academy under Martin Haselböck, playing the trumpet concerto by Joseph Haydn. Friedrich's involvement with historical performance practices led him to collaborate with many orchestras and musical groups, including the Orchestre des Champs-Elysees, La Stagione Frankfurt, Kammerorchester Basel, L'arte del mondo, Concerto Melante, the Berliner Barock Solisten, and the Cappella Andrea Barca under Sir András Schiff.

Friedrich has always studied both older and modern music, seeing no reason for the two not to be studied and performed side by side. In addition to his classical and Baroque performances, he has also premiered many significant works by a number of contemporary artists, with this list including composers such as Wolfgang Rihm, Carola Bauckholt, Luciano Berio, Edison Denissov, Peter Eötvös, Hans Werner Henze, Adriana Hölszky, Nicolaus A. Huber, Luca Lombardi, Benedict Mason, Sir Peter Maxwell Davis, Hilda Parèdes, Matthias Pintscher, Jan Rääts, Rebecca Saunders, Nina Šenk, Enjott Schneider, Daniel Schnyder, Gerhard Stäbler, Eino Tamberg, Caspar Johannes Walter, Christian Wolff, and Benjamin Yusopov.

Friedrich's repertoire is also made up in part by solo recordings and performaces, with his CD recording of "Nobody knows de trouble I see" by Bernd Alois Zimmermann winning the Echo Klassik Award in 1994 (see table in Awards).
