"La Bikina" is a Mexican song written by Rubén Fuentes in 1964.[1] The title word "bikina" has no meaning in Spanish. One account of the origin of the song's unusual title claims that Fuentes' son once commented that women wearing bikinis should be called "bikinas."[2] Another account, retold by Fuentes, claims that an original instrumental version of the song was passed on to Juan García Esquivel who titled it "The Beginning." Before its publication, this English language title was corrupted into "La Bikina."[3]
The song has been recorded by many artists, including: Lucha Villa,[4] María de Lourdes,[5]La Gran Orquesta de Paul Mauriat,[6] Aberto Vazquez,[7] Celia Cruz,[8] Juan Torres, [9] Chayito Valdez[10], Gaulberto Ibarreto[11], Yanni[12], Ray Conniff,[13] Julio Iglesias (in French under the title "L’existence se danse"),[14] Karol Sevilla (for the movie Coco),[15] and many others. It was also the theme song of the animated Cantiflas Show throughout the 1970's and 1980's.[16]

As part of the second leg of his tour, Miguel presented five shows at the Auditorio Coca-Cola in Monterrey, Mexico from 13 to 17 April 2000,[17][18] During his concerts in Monterrey, he was joined by Cutberto Pérez's band Mariachi 2000 and performed live covers of "Y" and "La Bikina", which were made available as singles for Vivo.[19][20] "La Bikina" was released as the lead single from the album on 15 September 2000, which an editor for La Opinión noted that the release day was likely meant to coincide with the Mexican Independence Day.[19] Luis Miguel's version peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs in the United States.[21] It recognized as one of the best performing Latin songs of the year at the BMI Latin Awards in 2002.[22]
