Woodlands Lions

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Woodlands Lions is a Singaporean football club founded by R. Vengadasalam, who was formerly the General Manager of Woodlands Wellington FC (a dissolved Singapore Premier League club) in 2022.[1] In 2021, they announced that they hoped to fill the void left by Woodlands Wellington (WWFC) and Sembawang Rangers, which exited Singapore's professional football league in 2014 and 2003 respectively.[2]

History[edit]

In 2022, they took part in the Grassroots Coaching Course conducted by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) with FAS-affiliated members Verde Cresta Combined Sports Club.[3] At the same time, they announced that they had secured a $10 million backing for Woodlands Lions to play in the Singapore Premier League.[4]

Vengadasalam has been working with the FAS to secure the club's entry into the Singapore Premier League (SPL) for the 2024-25 Singapore Premier League season but failed to obtain a licence.[5][6]

Woodlands Lions FC prioritizes youth development, providing opportunities for players who might not have made their school teams or whose schools lack football programs. Vengadasalam leverages his experience as a player and resident of Sembawang, focusing his talent scouting efforts in the northern part of Singapore.

They take part in the 2023 Singapore Premier League U17 Competition but finished last. They also take part in the 2024 Singapore Youth Team.
