Kamble

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kamble is a Marathi Indian surname commonly used by communities residing in Maharashtra. The word "kamble" is literally translated as "cotton blankets" and could very well be derived from it; though there also existed clan, namely Sonkamble, and this could be its derivation, too.

The surname is usually found amongst Marathi Buddhists (generally converted from Mahar caste) who were cotton farmers and weavers in the region of Vidarbha. The surname though can now be found in most other Marathi communities too like Kunbi, Shimpi, Vani, Aagri, Gosavi(Giri), certain Brahmin subcastes (like Karhades and Panchals),[1] marathi Jains, Mang(Matang), Dhangar, etc.[2] The surname is also shared by Maratha-kunbi, teli, Maratha especially in Satara region[3] and Mahar communities of Maharashtra[4].The surname is also found amongst Lohar, Vishwakarmas (Panchal, also called Vishwabrahmins), Holeyas, saitwal(native Jain community), etc. Finally, it is also sometimes found in native Marathi groups like Bhois and certain tribes in NT-B.
