The 2011 QAFL reserves season was held from 2 April to 18 September. It was the first Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) reserves season held since the formation of the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL), which resulted in the disbandment of the senior QAFL competition.
The reserves competition was held for seven Queensland-based teams that had senior sides competing in the NEAFL.
Redland won the premiership, defeating Southport by 37 points in the 2011 QAFL reserves Grand Final.[2]
Background[edit]
In 2010, the Australian Football League (AFL) announced the formation of the NEAFL as a second-tier Australian rules football competition featuring teams from the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory. The NEAFL was primarily an amalgamation of the QAFL and AFL Canberra, with Queensland and Northern Territory teams forming the Northern Conference.[3]
Two new teams also joined the competition for its inaugural season in 2011: the reserves team of Gold Coast Suns (whose senior team joined the AFL in the same season); and the senior team of the Greater Western Sydney Giants, which was preparing to join the AFL in 2012.[4]
NT Thunder, which had joined the QAFL in 2009, joined the NEAFL but did not participate in the QAFL reserves.[5]
