Nia Umar

Rahmah Housniati (born 31 July 1978), better known as Nia Umar, is an Indonesian breastfeeding activist who founded Indonesian Breastfeeding Mothers Association in which she serves as vice chair.

Early life and education[edit]

Umar was born Rahmah Housniati on 31 July 1978 in Houston, Texas.[1][2] She went to Padjadjaran University majoring in communication science and earned her master's degree at Faculty of Public Health at University of Indonesia.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Umar is married to Muhammad Hani Syarief in 2003, and has had a son and three daughters, Najya Hani (born 2005) and Nayla Hani Assegaf (born 2015).[3][4]

Her husband is the brother of lawyer Ahmad Fikri Assegaf and the brother-in-law of psychologist Najelaa Shihab and journalist Najwa Shihab.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

Umar started her career as an intern at Indonesian Consumers Institute in 2001, and participated at World Breastfeeding Week.[1][5] She then worked as International lactation consultant and resigned to became a full time mother when her child was born.[1] Umar later worked as a general manager at IDN Media.[4] On 21 April 2007, she established Indonesian Breastfeeding Association and wrote a book titled Mutlitasking Breastfeeding Mama; Tips & Triks Menyusui dan Kembali Beraktivitas which successfully advocated extension of leave for pregnant women in Indonesia from three months to six months.[4][5] The organization then spread to 19 provinces and has branches in seven provinces, and Umar was nominated for Ibukota Awards in 2020 due to her contribution in environment.[4][5] She then became a baby wearing consultant at International Baby Food Action Network in Southeast Asia.[4] Umar later released her autobiography titled Mommy Breast in 2013.[5]
